Native or Invasive Plant Presentation Staff does not show a presenter from previous minutes. Staff will introduce Shinrin Yoku- Forest Bathing 5. Brief Updates from Staff Staff The cost for Median Plantings on Garland Avenue Report, and findings. A grant opportunity is available for a test pilot program. Deadline is February g'h. Staff recommends approval of the program and moving forward with a test pilot program. An information package is attached. Staff requests discussion and a motion from the Board. 6. Call to Order Don Steinkraus Members Present: Launder, LeVois, Madison, Steinkraus, Patterson, Lipinski, and Thomas. 2. Approval of Minutes Don Steinkraus UFAB MOTION: Madison moved approve the minutes with the correction of marking Patterson present for the meeting. Launder seconded the motion. Motion passed 7- 0-0. 3. Native or Invasive Plant Presentation Hank Thomas Thomas presented information on the Bush Honeysuckle. He discussed the following: • Introduction to North America • Habitat • Invasive Nature & Effect On Native Plants • Recommendations for Proper Removal • Plant Alternatives 4. Brief Updates from Staff Staff Highway 265 Planting (Joyce to Ivey), and Species Zelkova Serrata Ginkgo Biloba Shumard Oak Ulmus americana 'Princeton Cercis canadensis Redbud Cladrastis kentucea Yellowwood Amelencher canadensis Shadblow Serviceberry Mailing Address: 113 W. Madison and Steinkraus asked that they use native Milkweed plants. UFAB MOTION: Madison motioned to approve the staff suggestion for the Highway 265 Planting with special consideration to the Yellowood, Serviceberry, Redbud, Oak, and Princeton and Ginko Biloba be considered as an alternative if needed. Patterson seconded the motion. Motion Passed 7-0-0-0 Community Forest Storm Mitigation Plan for Arkansas Communities Scott said that staff met with the Arkansas Forestry Commission to draft a plan for the city trees in the event of a natural disaster. Tree City USA Staff has submitted all necessary information and are waiting to hear back on the status of the renewal. 5. UFAB Annual report to City Council Linn briefed the board that UFAB will present a report to the City Council. Linn urged all members to attend and inform City Council about any concerns or special points of interest within in the report. Linn also asked the board to make any updates or revisions to the reports. 6. Other Business or Announcements Lipinski discussed the celebration of trees and suggested noting other objectives and outcomes for the event in hopes of reaching a new population for the event. a. Applications for New Members Applications have been received, the city council has a nominating committee and will approve the new members. Lipinski asked how many applications there were. Maintenance costs are based on information provided by the Transportation Departments cost for maintaining the Garland Avenue medians and Parks Maintenance cost for a similar space in the city.All numbers area pproximation based on real world conditions,however costs may vary depending on labor and material cost at time of purchase. Estimates were done for the recently installed 12,485 Sq. Ft. median on Garland Avenue. The trees in the median, shown below, were given 4 Sq. Ft. of space under each tree, which was not included in the estimate. These areas were left for mulch. Native Milkweed is the primary habitat and food source for the Monarch Butterfly. 26 % of the native planting is Asters- Aster novae. Asters are an excellent source of food for bees and butterflies. 24 % of the native planting is for Virginia Sweetspire — Itea virginica. Virginia Sweetspire has showy fragrant blooms in the spring and provides nectar for birds and insects.
