Call to Order Don Steinkraus Members Present: Sue Madison, Vice Chair; Don Steinkraus, Chair; Kathy Launder; Malcom LeVois; Damon Lipinski 2. Approval of Minutes Don Steinkraus UFAB Motion: Madison moved for correct spelling of Yaupon Holly, Launder seconded the motion. Motion passed by voice vote, 4-0-0. 3. Native or Invasive Plant Presentation Sue Madison Madison presented information on the Yaupon Holly, she discussed the following: • Species Regional Distribution • Leaves and Berries • Various Forms 4. Celebration of Trees Derek Linn Linn explained that staff is currently working on quotes from various nurseries for the event. They are trying to acquire fruit trees locally. Staff hopes to have a complete list of available trees and shrubs within the following week. Mailing Address: 113 W. Mountain Street www.fayetteville-ar.gov Fayetteville,AR 72701 Steinkraus mentioned that Guy Ames would be a good resource for Paw Paw trees. Madison motioned for staff to acquire at least one fruit tree locally, Launder seconded the motion. Motion passed by voice vote, 4-0-0. Linn mentioned that staff will search for local varieties. There was further discussion regarding the need to educate about plant and shrub maintenance. Madison asked Linn about the different trees planted at the YRCC orchard. Linn said they planted European and Asian pears, native apples, and two varieties of pecan. He also mentioned that there is a staff member who routinely maintains the trees. Linn asked everyone to mark October 17t", 2015 for the Celebration of Trees. The event will be held at the Fayetteville Farmer's Market on the downtown square. Linn hopes to set up early, but is still working with Fayetteville Farmer's Market staff to establish a time that will work best for the vendors and city staff. Linn mentioned 6:00 am as a possible start time. The event will start at 7:00 am with the Mayor's Arbor Day proclamation. Lipinski asked if there were going to be any changes on how the tress would be given away. Linn asked for suggestions regarding the efficiency of the event. Lipinski suggested providing a list of trees for individuals to look at before they reach the front of the line. Madison suggested displaying the trees. Linn and Steinkraus recommended displaying one of each tree/bush along with signage in front of the tables so everyone could see what is available. Linn said he would need to contact the Farmer's Market in order coordinate spacing. Linn asked how many items each individual could take. Steinkraus proposed two shrubs, two tress, or one of each depending on the available planting space. He asked if there were educational material regarding where to plant trees. z Launder voiced that educational materials have been provided in the past. Steinkrauss asked how many different variety of plant/shrubs would be available. Linn said seven or eight varieties. 5. Other Business or Announcements Linn mentioned that John Scott will be filling Ken Eastin's position as the new Urban Forester and will start the following week. He will be available for the Celebration of Trees event. Linn also updated the members about the City of Fayetteville's Tree and Landscape Manual. He mentioned that currently discussions for adding invasive plants to the manual. Staff is partnering with the Sustainability and Resilience Department for this addition. Linn asked that UFAB members look through and provide suggestions on what should be deleted or edited in the manual. 6. Adjourn Steinkrauss adjourned the meeting at 5:49 pm.
