HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION
A regular meeting of the Fayetteville Historic District Commission was held on June 13,
2013 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 326 in the City Administration Building at 113 W. Mountain
Street, Fayetteville, Arkansas.

order.

Motion:
Commissioner Coley made a motion to approve. Commissioner Myres seconded the
motion.
Upon roll call the motion passed with a vote of 4-0-0.

New Business:
Presentation of HDC Preservation Awards:
Commissioner Coover introduced and presented awards to each of the award winners.
Best Practices Award:
• Mock-Fulbright House Restoration (5 Mount Nord)
• Arsaga's Adaptive Re -use (548 W. Dickson)
The Mayor's Award for Outstanding Service in Historic Preservation:
• "Up Among the Hills" movie
• History Minute Video Series
• Project Fayetteville Digital Image Archive (Fayetteville Public Library)
Preservation Award Honorable Mention:
• Starbucks coffee shop (2117 Martin Luther King Boulevard) historical photos

ProiectIdeas:
Commissioner Hogan asked if all of the cemeteries were mapped.
Commissioner Coley stated that the Washington County Historical Society has them
from a 1970's survey.
Commissioner Coover stated he was open to ideas that would protect and identify local
cemeteries, maybe walking tours.
Commissioner Coley stated that the Skelton Cemetery needs to be on the national
registry.
Jesse Fulcher, Current Planner, noted the source document and author that discusses the
Skelton Cemetery.
Commissioner Coover discussed T. Ewing Shelton and the many buildings he designed.
His daughter is back in Fayetteville and she has his old files. Local architects need to be
recognized.
Commissioner Coover asked about getting the National Guard Armory registered.
Commissioner Coley stated that all surrounding buildings are registered.
Commissioner Hogan stated that a Historic District needs to be created between School
and College and Meadow and Rock.
Commissioner Coover discussed the need for contributing structures within this
boundary.

Fulcher stated that a survey may have been done in 2007 of the structures in this area.
Comimssioner Coley asked about the necessary steps to accomplish a new district.
Fulcher asked the commissioners to clarify if they wanted to create a Historic District or
a Local Ordinance District, and discussed the difference between the two designations.
Commissioner Coley stated that they should start with a district along Center Street.
Fulcher stated he would put together a bullet -point list for a historic district vs. a local
ordinance district.

Commission Myres asked to table the decision until the following meeting with the other
current members were present as well as any new appointees.
Commissioner Myres made a motion to approve. Commissioner Coley seconded the
motion.
Upon roll call the motion passed with a vote of 4-0-0.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:05 PM.
