Mountain St. Fayetteville, AR 72701 Arts Council present: Julie Gabel, Michael Landman, Dede Peters (chaired meeting), Hank Kaminsky, John O'Connell, LaDawna Whiteside, Mark Landon Smith Kathy Thompson arrived at 6:15pm. Absent: Bryan Gott Meeting called to order at 6:10 pm. II. Agenda approved III. Minutes approved. IV. Introduction of Lionel Jordan in audience - alderman and mayoral candidate V. Review of Sub -committees: Mayoral Debate Sub -Committee: o Gabel reported that the League of Women Voters is interested in presenting some of the Fayetteville Arts Council issues to the mayoral candidates at a debate in the future. Gable asked that Council members email questions to her by May 1s'. Debate host organization to be determined at a later date. o Additional discussion occurred about Council members meeting with candidates. Final conclusion was that members should meet with candidate as individual citizens. • Advisory Board Development Sub -Committee: Sub -committee has not met. Suggestion was made and agreed upon that "board" be removed from sub -committee name since there will not be a board, but rather "advisors" or "ambassadors" from the community who give informal requests and suggestions to the Arts Council. • Cultural Inventory Sub -committee: Sub -committee is meeting on April 15th. Kaminsky reported that [Arkansas Creative Impact] study conducted by Stuart Rosenthal in conjunction with the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation is due out November; it will be Arkansas specific. • Way -finding Sub -committee: Have not met. • CADI Sub -committee: Gabel reported that the sub -committee has identified 8 neighborhood associations in the District. Sub -committee feels that it cannot proceed without a clear vision and strategic plan from the Arts Council. Sub -committee asks that vision and plane be established. • Community Forum Sub -Committee: Sub -committee is not active at the moment. • Regional Sub -Committee: Thompson reported that a meeting with Bentonville has been requested, but has not been scheduled. It most likely will occur when more collaboration is needed. VI. Discussion: • O'Connell made the motion to develop a vision and mission statement as well as a strategic plan. Sub -committee formed - Vision Statement and Strategic Planning Sub -committee comprised of O'Connell, Kaminsky, and Whiteside whom will present at next meeting. • Gabel and Peters reported about status of Fayetteville Arts Festival presented by FDP — FDP is in critical fundraising mode. Visual arts portion of festival may no occur, but performing arts portion will. • Landman suggested that current Arts Council members start recruiting new applicants for the 3 positions that will come open. • Peters reported that the Terri Trotter, interim CEO of Walton Arts Center has offered support to Arts Council. Walton Arts Center will present the second phase of their feasibility study at the Walton Arts Center Council meeting on April 23, at 3:30 in McBride Studio at Walton Arts Center. Landman and Peters agreed to attend and represent the Arts Council. • A request was made that one Arts Council member be present in the audience at all Walton Arts Center Council meetings. There were no volunteers. Nancy Allen, Ward 2 Alderperson offered to send her personal meeting notes to the council. VII. ACTION ITEMS: • Email Gabel with questions for mayoral candidates to be posed to the candidates at a future debate. • Committees that have not met need to. • Council members need to start recruiting new Arts Council candidates. • Council members need to contact their individual alderpersons and talk with him/her about the Arts Council. • A volunteer Arts Council member is needed to attend Walton Arts Center Council meetings, usually held the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 3:30pm. • Community Imagination StudioNouthCan! would like to present at next Arts Council meeting.
