Meeting Minutes
City Hall, Room 326 —113 W. Mountain St. Fayetteville, AR 72701
Arts Council present: Julie Gabel, Bryan Gott, Michael Landman, Dede Peters, Hank
Kaminsky, John O'Connell, Kathy Thompson, LaDawna Whiteside
Arts Council absent: Mark Landon Smith
Guests:
Susan Hutchcroft/Chairperson — Northwest Arkansas Creative Community Center
Daymara Baker/Executive Director — Northwest Arkansas Creative Community Center
Brenda Thiel/City Council — City of Fayetteville
Meeting called to order at 6:03 pm.
II. Agenda unanimously approved.
III. Minutes unanimously approved.
IV. Presentation: Northwest Arkansas Creative Community Center
• Hutchcroft and Baker presented plan for center
• ideally, would like to be located in the "old Tyson/Mexican Original plant"
• Would house gallery; black box performance space; workshops for wood,
metal, ceramics; outdoor amphitheater
• focus on teaching and creating sellable product
• would have city park attached
• create a sustainable center
• working with Marlon Blackwell/architect and UA Community Design
Center (already have rough plans)
• anticipate a 3 phase project, first phase estimated cost $100,000 and
center would hope to be open to public 2008
• did not disclose funding
• already have non-profit status
• would ask city for a discounted lease, perhaps $1/year. Center would
always be available for emergency services.
• presentation to City Council Nov. 27.
• Brenda Thiel made several clarifications
• FAC member Thompson asked about how the Center would differ from
the proposed Jefferson School Project — Hutchcroft and Baker stated that
it seemed Jefferson would have more social services
• FAC member Peters asked general question about City and UA
involvement in another creative center when City and UA are already
involved in one — the Walton Arts Center. Thiel suggested the question be
directed toward City and UA representatives on Walton Arts Center and
Council boards.
V. Monument and Art Donation Ordinance review: Table changes until FAC hears
from City Attorney.
VI. Retreat Discussion
• Kaminsky relayed that Janet Harney/Program Manager Expansion Arts —
Arkansas Arts Council could meet with us on a weekday
• Thompson relayed that Bill Mitchell/Consultant— MITCHELLworks, Ed
Clifford/President & CEO — Bentonville/Bella Vista Chamber of
Commerce, Daniel Hintz/Consultant — Hintz Innovative Strategies would
all meet with us.
• Gott declared that having input from both Fayetteville Chamber and
Advertising & Promotions Committee is vital
• Another suggestion is to build a relationship with Steve Rust/President &
CEO — Fayetteville Economic Development Council
• Retreat planned for: Thursday December 20.
VII. To Do Items:
Peters ask for any sort of creative inventory from Walton Arts Center
Landman to find information on UA assisting with CADI "Creative Inventory"
Thompson to secure retreat space and moderator.
VIII. Brainstorming:
• Have a similar presentation to Arkansas Arts Council's 2007 ArtsLlnk
Connecting Commerce with the Creative Economy presented to City
Council, Advertising & Promotion Committee and Fayetteville Chamber of
Commerce
