Meeting Minutes
City Hall, Room 326 — 113 W. Mountain St. Fayetteville, AR 72701
Arts Council present: Julie Gabel, Bryan Gott, Michael Landman, Dede Peters, Mark
Landon Smith, Kathy Thompson, LaDawna Whiteside
Arts Council absent: Hank Kaminsky, John O'Connell
Guests:
• Jeannie Hulen/University of Arkansas — Assistant Professor of Ceramics
• Emily Smith/University of Arkansas — Assistant Director of Development
Meeting called to order at 6:05 pm.
II. Agenda unanimously approved.
III. Minutes unanimously approved with the correction - Kaminsky not a member of the
Vision and Strategy Committee
IV. Presentation: UA Ceramics Symposium 2008: "Crafting Contact"
• Jeannie Hulen gave PowerPoint presentation of ceramics symposium occurring
in Jan/Feb 2008. Expressed the hope that Fayetteville joins what is known as a
"Ceramic Belt" running geographically through the US. Presentation included
details such as information on jurors and presenters.
• Smith spoke about the support of the University and Fayetteville A&P.
• Both Hulen and Smith hope the Arts Council and local business support the
symposium in anyway possible, with avocation and use of physical space.
V. Landman presented details of upcoming Arts Council convention. Most council
members said they planned on attending.
VI. Agenda Item #5 dismissed, as deadline for proposal had expired
VII. Agenda Item #6 - Whiteside presented suggested revisions to "Donated Public Art,
Monument and Memorial Policy". Council members agreed to some language
changes and requested that Whiteside find out additional information from City
staff.
VIII. Agenda Item #7: no new information presented to Gott about Arts Council Progress
Plan.
IX. Agenda Item #8 — Arts partnership with Bentonville tabled.
X. Whiteside shared with members the ideals for future Arts Council members: "players'
in Northwest Arkansas, candidates should show interest in economic growth, arts
interest and activity.
XI. Future business:
• Create inventory of organization, businesses, individuals, etc. that are part of the
"creative economy" in Northwest Arkansas. Perhaps acquiring such information
from Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce.
• Initiate interaction between such groups and Fayetteville Arts Council.
• Establish an Advisory Committee on how to be involved in the Arts Council
• Discuss possibility of a Fayetteville Public Art endowment with community
foundations.
