Elizabeth Danley, Children's Librarian, made a report on the largest ever summer reading program. The theme was "Arkansas - 150 years of opportunity." During the period from June 3 to September 3, 712 children re- gistered. The average attendance at the 1:30 p.m. "Library Happenings" programs on Aspects of Arkansas was 110; at the 2:30 program the average attendance was 90. Donations fgz "Happenings" pries came from local businesses. There were 27 volunteer helpers who gave 230 hours of service. Librarian Danley brought five of her helpers to introduce to the Board -- Amy Abbott, Mark Gibbs, Charlene Rexford, Matt Straka, and Laurin Wallace. Director Harrison presented the financial and statistical reports attached. The County quarterly allotment has beenreceived. Circulation generally is up. Ms. Harrison also reported that an air conditioner had ceased to function and been replaced. Since no invoice has yet been received, the effect on the budget is not yet clear. Copies of "History of the Fayetteville Library" were given to Board members. Scott Starr had examined the trees on library property at Ms. Harrison's request. He recommended removal of one tree and the tree stump near the front door. The Board decided to hold the decision on removal until the effect on the budget of the emergency air conditioner purchase had been received. Director Harriss requested the purchase of a four -cubic -yard dumpster at 1585, with an increased monthly charge for pick-up from `18.50 to 134.67. A motion to buy the dumpster was submitted by Bobbye Hay, seconded by Jane House, and unanimously approved. The Board authorized Ms. Harrison to make the decision on selection of a long distance telephone company. In a discussion of long range planning, Jane House reviewed the draft on library service sent out by Ms. Harrison. She emphasized the recommendations for surveys, Board training, personnel guidelines, and a review of applicable laws. Ms. Harrison indicated that Genie Donovan and the news articles of Pat Donat provide publicity for the library; also the Ozarks Regiona-. Library assists in public relations by providing books to the jail, hospitals, and retirement homes through the Library for Blind and Physically Handicapped. Ms. Wright said there is a problem in defining the service area because the library serves a much larger population than within the city limits. She pointed out that Freedom to Read and the Library Bill of Rights already have been adopted as recommended. The library is open 56 hours per week --more than the 50 hours recommended for Fayetteville's population. Ms. Salassi volunteered to ask Professor Robert Hay of the University of Arkansas for management survey help. The Board asked Pat Donat for help in publicizing the closing of the library during workshop week and the reprieve from fines for overdue books returned during that week. Respectfully submitted, Bobbye S.' Hay, Secretary
