217 EAST DICKSON STREET
FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS 72701
Board of Directors
Fayetteville Public Library
Meeting November 12, 198L1., 4:00 p.m.
Present: Robbin Anderson, Linda Harrison, Bobbye Hay, Jane House, Lois
Miller, Margaret Salassi, and Pat Donat of the Northwest
Arkansas Times.
The minutes of the October meeting were approved as mailed.
Director Harrison presented statistical and financial reports. She
emphasized that, though the "bottom line" (cash balance) is short, quarterly
payments are due. There was an error in payroll takes because a new employee
was not included. The error will be corrected in December.
Director Harrison also reported on the following old business:
Tortlmmunity/Liability
A letter from the City Attorney indicates insurance is not
necessary for the Board members and employees. The question
of injury to volunteers was not covered. Director Harrison
was asked to investigate further with other similar organizations.
Discarded materials
Director Harrison read excerpts from the Ozarks Regional Library
policy, paragraph #5 and Local Public Library Administration.
Chairman Anderson read from Act 137 of the statutes of the State
of Arkansas. No response has been received from the Collection
Management and Development Committe of the American Library
Association. Discussion involved consideration of what the
university is teaching student librarians, means of relocating
to other libraries or selling, and city storage for sale items.
Director Anderson suggested a hearing with the Finance Committee
on handling of discards.
Budget
As directed by the finance committee, the budget has been re-
organized, retyped, and submitted.
Library Inventory
Material received from the city seemed to provide inadequate
guidance. It was duplicated pages from an unidentified book.
Bobbye Hay agreed to call Scott Linebaugh, City Controller, for
further guidance in producing an inventory of library property
which would conform to city policy and procedure.
New business included approving a request for permission to accept as
a loan from the County useful books now being stored in the Old Jail. The
County will move the books. The Board agreed to accept custodianship provided
the books are properly identified and a list of the books accepted is filed
with the County Judge.
After a summary of the dedicated service rendered by Grace Keith
through the years, Lois Miller moved that the genealogical section be
named the Grace Keith Genealogical Collection and properly identified
by a plaque. Margaret Salassi provided the second. The motion was
approved unanimously. Lois Miller and Linda Harrison were appointed
to supervise the proper identification of the section and plan an
appropriate celebration.
The meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
