Fayetteville Public Library
September 26, 1988, 4:00 p.m.
In a special called meeting, the Board of Trustees (with all members
present and with the Library Director present) met in executive session
to consider its annual evaluation of the Director, Linda Harrison.
Ms. Harrison, asked to assess the past year in terms both of accomplish-
ments and of limitations, noted that regular staff meetings on a monthly
basis have been instituted this year and have been extremely productive.
The gains in inter -staff communication have been especially helpful.
Minutes are taken for later circulation among absent staff members. The
regular review of Library procedural matters has helped everyone, and the
entire staff feels much more involved.
The Director further observed, in response to a question, that the new
employee to help with payroll and bookkeeping has especially relieved
her (the Director) of many time-consuming chores. The new staff member
has talked with University of Arkansas authorities about inventory
procedures and hopes to have a fixed asset inventory done by the end of
the year.
The newly organized Circulation Department has worked well. The establish-
ment of three clearly-repognized department heads has allowed the Library
Director to be able to delegate more authority. Furthermore, the Children's
Department now appears to be working quite smoothly, with a very successful
program this past summer especially noteworthy.
Present needs include the desirability of more publicity to be generated
for the Library and for the ser.ces it can provide for the community.
There is also the need to get annual budgets put together a bit sooner,
without the need for last-minute rushing. One suggestion is to include
information about budget preparation on the August agenda as a regular
item.
Both the Director and the Board noted the hope for the Library Director
to be freer from routine tasks to allow more time for advance planning.
A motion by Charles Kirchen, seconded by Carol Phillips, to advise the
Library Director of the Board's pleasure at her performance and leadership
during the past year and at the successes of the past twelve months was
passed unanimously. Other members of the Board expressed informally their
sense that this has indeed been a busy year of accomplishments.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:40 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Atir
