Fayetteville Public Library
August 10, 1987, 4:00 p.m.
Present: Board Members Dorothy Bowen, Bobbye Hay, Foster Park, Carol Phillips;
Library Director Linda Harrison; Ozarks Regional Library Director Karen
Duree,
The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by President Hay. The minutes of the
regular July 13 meeting were approved as corrected.
Director Harrison circulated and discussed the Statistical Report and the Financial
Report for July. She particularly noted the $1000 income in a gift from Chevron,
which is part of a matching grant. Building .& Grounds expenditures are up a bit (as
usual in the summer season), and electricity use is up.
Treasurer Phillips raised the question of possible dangers to the safety and availa-
bility of our long-term Certificates of Deposits, given the recent losses by Arkansas
savings and loan institutions, but in the general discussion that followed the
concensus was that there was no reason to transfer the CDs now, especially in view
of the penalties that would be assessed.
In the discussion of the scheduled evaluation of the Library Director by the Board,
various problems with sample evaluation forms were noted. A motion by Carol Phillips,
seconded by Dorothy Bowen, to allow Director Harrison to try out, on a self -rating
basis, the form she prefers was passed unanimously. Further evaluation procedures
will be determined at a future regular or special called meeting.
President Hay announced that the Ozarks Regional Library area seems not to have any
asbestos contamination and will plan to remain open while removal of asbestos in the
remainder of the building takes place. The City of Fayetteville will receive bids
for the necessary work until August 27; the City Board (perhaps at its September 8
meeting) will decide about the contrast. There is hope that the work can be done in
October, but at the moment there is no guarantee. Apparently our regular September 14
Board irieeting is the earliest we can make definite closing and other plans for the
asbestos project.
Director Harrison announced the annual fund-raising book sale by the Friends of the
Fayetteville Public Library for September 25-26.
It was agreed by the Board to meet somewhat later than the regular 4:00 p.m. time on
September 14, if the contract for asbestos removal is in place and plans need to be
made for the closing of the Library. A later time will allow any Library personnel,
who would be working earlier, to attend and to participate in the discussion/plans.
In regard to publicity for the Library President Hay noted that she had contacted the
Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, who will be happy to insert in their regular bulletin
of information any items of interest. Preset Hay also distributed an announcement
about the availability of speakers on Library topics, which Board members were invited
to circulate among groups they know. Director Harrison has also gathered a list of
service clubs and the like for possible contacts. Public service announcements on
local radio stations and additional feature articles in the Northwest Arkansas Times
page 2
Meeting for August 10, 1987 (continued)
were also noted as good possibilities.
President Hay reminded the Board about the Arkansas Library Association meeting in
Fayetteville, November 1-3. A very tight schedule for the meetings precludes our
doing much more than issuing a general invitation to visit the Fayetteville Library
in whatever free time the delegate -visitors may have.
Presdient Hay further asked the Board to begin thinking about how we might work out
long-range plans for the Library, once the asbestos contamination project is concluded.
The meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Foster Park, Secretary
