The minutes of the May meeting were approved as mailed. Director Harrison presented the financial and statistical reports attached. Both circulation and registrations still are down from 1985. Petty cash of $793 includes gifts to order specific titles as memorials. SWEPCO charges for air conditioning were considered high. The purchase of microfilm cabinets (shown under Fixed assets) was a budgeted item. Sale of discarded books through the annual sale of the Friends of the Library was discussed. Such disposal apparently is legally acceptable. Director Harrison pointed out this procedure would be work saving because no boxing for storage would be necessary and would return funds to the library because sale receipts are used for gifts to the library. Bobbye Hay made a motion to give the library discards to the Friends for sale. Carol Phillips porvided the second. The motion was approved unanimously. Director Harrison requested the purchase of a new card catalog at an approximate cost of $1,953 plus shipping. The catalog would match other card catalogs currently in service and expand available card space which is becoming limited. No funds for this item were provided in the operating budget; however, there currently is $6,459.40 in the furniture fund. Carol Phillips moved that the purchase be approved from the furniture fund. Bobbye Hay provided the second. The motion was approved unanimously. Director Harrison asked for directions for the traditional pre -Labor Day Workshop and grace period for the return of books. After Board discussion, Bobbye Hay made a motion that the Workshop and grace period be set for August 25-31, with procedures to be the same as in the past except that additional advertising is to be accented. Carol Phillips provided the second. The motion was approved unanimously. A request from a Girl Scout Troop to plant a sesquicentennial memorial tree on the Library lawn was presented. The Board discussed the project, then moved to the library lawn to locate a desirable place for planting the tree. Carol Phillips made a motion that the Girl Scout Troop be permitted to plant a white dogwood tree in the area west of the front sidewalk. Bobbye Hay provided the second. The motion was approved unanimously. After return to the library meeting area, the Board reviewed projects in progress. Bobbye Hay asked about the ceiling report from Don Bunn and the presentation by Dr. Duncan on the medical aspects of asbestos exposure. No progress had been made on either. Carol Phillips asked about the removal of the mailbox and the gas light. Director Harrison reported that the mailbox is down. The gaslight must be removed by a plumber; it will be removed when a plumber can be hired. No information was available on appraisal of the Indian painting because the appraiser could not be reached. Director Harrison delivered the message from Carol Wright that the new Elkins Library was proving very successful. The meeting adjourned at 4:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Bobbye S.
