Board of Directors Meeting
The Board held its regular monthly meeting on October 12, 1981 with Mrs.
Miller and Dr. Anderson absent.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Mr. Parker reported that the City has trimmed the limbs from trees to
allow more visibility of the one-way signs in front of the library. He asked
for and received a response that the existing signs are inadequate. Mrs. Foster
requested that when the new signs are installed, if another parking space could
be designated for use by the handicapped.
The statistical and financial reports for the month, third quarter and
year-to-date were presented and accepted. (See attached.)
Mrs. Foster reported that: 1) AAA Janitroial Service has been hired on
a contract basis to fill the salaried position of Oda Sanders. 2) Kathryn
Trice has instigated a Junior Friends of the Library group in an effort to
maintain an interest in the library for 7th grade students. Sue Walker from
the Adult Services staff will be assisting as laison. Some of the planned
activities include meetings on Saturdays, working in the library, publishing a
newsletter, and compiling bibliographies for books of interest to this targeted
age
group. 3) there is a need for a written procedure concerning a patron's objection
to library material. After a general discussion the following procedure was
formulated;
a) the complainant would be asked to complete the Patron's Request for
Reconsideration of a Work form.
b) when the form is returnedto the librarian, it will be forwarded
(along with the questionable material) to an independent Review
Committee.
c) the Review Committee will decide what, if any, restriction should be
placed on the material in question.
d) the Review Committee will report their decision to the Library
Board of Directors.
4) the main objective arising from the 1981 Arkansas Library Association Con-
ference was to work toward lifting the ceiling on the 1 mill tax for library
support. This will involve a petition for a constitutional revision leading
to elections at the local level for increased support. It was noted that the
Legislative Committee of the Arkansas Library Association and the newly
developed Legislative Network will be actively concentrating their efforts
toward this goal.: Mrs. Foster asked for the Board's support of this objective.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully,
Linda Foster, Librarian
