HomeMy WebLinkAbout1971-07-21 MinutesThe Board of the Fayetteville Public Library met at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 21,
1971, in the auditorium with all members present.
Mr. Idlliams announced that he had checked on the light ballasts and found
that the expectancy of 8/9 years should cause us to anticipate major replacembnts
in the near future.
Mrs. Wight observed that several ferocieus dogs had been removed before the
arrival of children at the library.
The minutes were read and corrected: the bamboo blinds ( see Paragraph 2,
Minutes of June 14, 1971) were purchased with money from the sale of books
donated but not needed by the library.
Mrs. Keith gave the monthly report on circulation, registration, and petty
cash (attached), and further commented that:
1. Although we have received gift books and namorials, lost
'books are a plague.
2. The parking barriers are being broken: Mr. 1611 lams will see
if the telephone poles formerly used or concrete blocks can
be installed.
3. Two cracks are visible in the upper windows and 1 joint is
missing between two glass panes.
4. There are leaks by the west side of the front door and on
the south side by the filing cabinet.
5. Overdue books listed by the library and called to the notice
of the city attorney now total 31. The city ordinance should
be invoked after proper publicity.
6. A bicycle rack in front is needed. The local users of such
racks -411 be queried as to source, price, etc.
7. The summer reading program now has 682 children enrolled, and
the trailer program at the Youth Center is quite successful
after a slow start and initial distractions.
Mr. Shelton mentioned the fact that the Library was the beneficiary of an
as yet unidentified bequest of real estate from Mrs. Lessie Stringfellow Read.
Mrs. Wright reported on the presetn books stock in the Library (attached).
Mr. Alliams reported on the repair of the elevator and application for
reimbursement from the insurance company; he suggested that city-suppl3red
boulders be put in the front parking area until a kindly garden club plant
low shrubs to eleinate traffic hazards; and he suggested that the Shenandoah
Electric Co. be employed to inspect the ballasts and starters, a step
recommended by Mr. Seagraves.
Mrs. Wright announced that a conference of perhaps four dozen pubic librarians
would hold a 5 -day workshop at Pomfret on August 1-6. Mrs. Murphy will serve
tea/punch as a representative of the Board.
Mrs. Murphy presented the monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual financial
reports (attached) and asked support in her petition, vocaland loud, to
the city manager for upkeep and miscellaneous fund restoration.
