There was a larger attendance of the public than usual. The minutes of the annual meeting of 1957 were read and approved. The report of the treasurer,Mrs.Chaney, showed a balance of $328.00 on January 1,1958 and a total of $6575.00 in the building fund. The total disbursements was $6212.21. The report of the librarian,Mrs.-De al,showed a total book stock of 11,521 books in the Fayetteville Public Library and 26,603 in the County Library,to which the citizens of the city have access. The total circulation was 86,049,adult circulation,39,968 and juvenile, 461081,an{;:increase of 5,497 over the year 1956. The registr.gtion was 1179,an increase of 102. Mrs.Deal reported on the various activities of the library during 1957. In February an exhibit of 100 Notable Books of 1956 was on display for one week. The most successful Summer Reading Program during Mrs.Dealls tenure of office was carried out. Its success,s.I;eal stat - Ir due to the work of a children's libbarian for the summer to more careful planning, and prep aration,to wider publicity,an.d to excellent support given by the schools. In November the County Library and the Department of Library Science of the University held the fourth annual Book Fair,to which the Fayetteville Public Library gave full suppurt. The attendance was over 4500. Mrs.Deal reported further on special visits to the library by various groups of young people and on the srvices rendered by the library to various clubs in the matter of compiling book lists, finding material for programs, and ordering books for the public. She reported furthermore on the work the library has been doing with KGRH and Nr s.Fleming in the prepara- tion for the Monday morning program on books and reading. The citizens of this city, unfortunately,do not have too g f^t a knowledge about the various activities of the Fayetteville Public Library and the many services it renders through consecrated efforts of Mrs.Deal and her efficient staff. If encouraging results come from the efforts of a children's librarian for the summer, what could be accomplished by a full time children's librarian would not be too hard to imagine. If our librarian and her staff can render such excellent services on the second floor of a building that is reached by stairs that are not quite as steep as a ladder, what would they contribute to the city in a modern,one-storey library building with more books and library personnel? A few less steps to climb and a few more books to rindulate would answer a great public need for a city of our size and. importance. It was voted that the retiring board members,Mr.Williams,Mr,kylie, and Mr.McMillen,be elected to serve another term on the board. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m. O.irv'.Mellillen, Se cretary Md.nutes of the Library Board.
