HomeMy WebLinkAbout1955-01-25 MinutesMinutes of the Library Board January 25,1955 The Fayetteville Public Library Board met on January 25,1955 in the Library rooms at 7:00 p.m. In the absence of the chai.rman,Mr.'McWhorter, Mr.Greenhaw,viue-chairman,ca.11ed the meeting to order and presided. Members present were:Mr.Cxreenhaw,Mrs.�:►atson,Mrs.Chaney,Mr.Rudolph,: Mr-Wilson,and Mr -McMillen. Mrs.Deal was also present. The minutes of August 10 were read. and approved.. The report of the Treasurer,Mrs.Chaney,showed a balance in the First National Bank of $581.15 on January 1,1955. It was voted to approve the budget for 1955 as presented. by the Budget Committee. It was reported that the Library would receive the sum of $2750 from the Community Chest this year instead. of $3000. The Librarian reported on circulation and other matters for the past four months. The circulation figures were as follows:September 5143,Octo-- ber 5890,November 6938,December 5373. Mrs.Deal also reported that Mrs.Paulsm rud Attendee' the library meeting in Little Rock on March 7. It was voted to pay Mrs.Paulsrud's transportation expenses to the library meeting held in Little Rock. Mrs -Deal informed the Board that a book fair would be held on Febru- ary 15,16,and 17 and that the sponsors would be the Library,the Elementary Department of the College of Education,and the Fayetteville Printing Com- pany. Adjourned. 0.?'.TII�cMillen, Secret ary Public Library Association Minutes of the Annual Meeting January 25,1955 The annual meeting of the Fayetteville Public Library Association was held on January 25,1955 in the Library rooms at 8:00 p.m. In the absence of the President,Mr.Mc'f"norter,the Vice-President,Mr.Greenhaw,presided. The minutes of the annual meeting of 1954 were read and approved. The report'of the Trea.surer,Mrs.Chaney,showed a balance in the First Wational Bank of 0615.35,rnaturity value of U.S.bonds $1425.00,investment with the Building and Loan Association $2800.00,total assets $4840.35. A document signed. by Mr.E.A.Cowan certifies that he has examined the records of the Trejsurer covering the period from January 1,1954 through '7ecember 31,1954Ais filed with these minutes. The Annual Keport of the Libra ,rian,lilrs.Deal, showed a total circulation for the year of 78,604,whieh was an increase of more than 4,000 over 1053 That represents 4.6 books per capita,an increase from two r)er capita in ? 1950.The total book stock is now 11,311,x, net gain of 448 books. A total of $1,239.49 was spent during the year for books;147 books were presented, as gifts,including 39 memorial books. In addition to the book stock there were 3,008 on loan from the county collection. That the neer' for more books is really great is indicated by the fact that the Der capita stock is less than one book (.8). Paid subscriptions .for periodicals amount to 41,and the Library received 9 as gifts. A total of 1097.new borrowers registered during the year,733 adults and 364 child.ren.The Library received a gift of 500 book supports from the 'A'oma.n's Civic Club. The Summer Reading Club for children was a successful venture as indicated by the fact that 349 children read 16,805 books. As usual the librarians were called upon for special ref- erence service,for which purpose some 300 books were borrowed. from other libraries. Another aspect of the extra service rendered is indicated by the coming of many children from their schools to the library to complete as- signments or search for extra material. Still another aspect of the greater service rendered by the Library is the setting aside of reserve collections and the wide use made of them. The Fayetteville Public Library is deeply in- debted to Mrs.Deal and her assistants for their faithful and efficient ser - service to the community. It was voted to reelect Miss Julia Vaulx,Mr.E.L.lVilson,and Mr.0.1,%McMill- en to serve'on the Board for three years.
