HomeMy WebLinkAbout1952-09-09 MinutesMinutes of the Library Board September 9, 1952 The Fayetteville Public Library Board held a meeting on September 9,1952 in the Library rooms.The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by the cha.irman,Mr.McWhorter,who presided. Members present were Mr.McWhorter,Mrs.Chaney,Mrs.Adkisson, Mayor Rhea,Mr.Wilson,Mr.Rudolph,and Mr.MeMillen.The County Librarian, Mrs.Deal,also met with the Board. 5 The minutes for January 15 were read and approved. The report of the Treasurer showed a balance of 02876.30 in the First National Bank at the end of the month of August. The report of the Budget Committee was approved for the current year.The total amount authorized to be spent was $3000.00. The Librarian made a report for the first eight months of the present year.The number of new books purchased was 1191rthis'brought the total number of books up to 100921.Registration for these nine months was 943,of which 560 represented adults and 383 juvenile readers. Circulation figures during the eight months were very high.Month by month they were as follows:January 5485,Februaryl5532,March 5720, April 5487,May 55730June 66730July 7636,August 6944. The banner month for juvenile circulation was July,4818. Mrs.Deal reported that the summer reading program and story hour for children was carried on in cooperation with the Fayetteville public sc400ls.She reported,furthermore,that the number of books read by chil- dren this past summer exceeds all previous records. Mrs.Deal further reported that the City Library and the County Library were joint hosts to a spring meeting of all librarians in the third and fifth congressional districts.Eighty-two people were present. According to Mrs.Deal the Library received much favorable publicity over the area as a whole as a result of the meeting. The table installed as memorial to Cherry Watson was displayed. The Secretary was instructed to write a letter of appreciation to Mr.and Mrs.Edmond P.Watson for the cabinet presented by them in mem- ory of their daughter Cherry and a vote of thanks was given to Mr.Ed l''ilson,who so kQdly offered to finish it.It is a beautiful piece of work and is a fitting memorial to one who would have graced the Library often with her presence. It was voted that the following be the legal holidays to be observed in closing the Library:New Year's day,May 30,July 4,Labor day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas day. " It was voted. to authorize Mrs.Deal to employ an additional part time helper for the Library at an estimated cost of about $45 per month. It was voted to authorize the payment of bus fare to Little Rock for one Library helper to attend the State Library Association for the October meeting 1952. Adjourned. 0.W.MC-millen,Secretary
