ADVISORY BOARD
Minutes for March 1, 2010
Opening:
The regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was called
to order by Chairman Steve Hatfield at 5:32 p.m. in room 111 at the City
Administration Building located at 113 West Mountain Street in
Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Present:
Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members Biendara, Hatfield,
Hazelrigs, Lindsey, Mauritson, Meinecke, Waite, Meldrum, and Watson
were present. Staff members Edmonston, Jones, Jumper, Humphry,
Gaulke, Thomas, and the audience were present.
1. Mayor Jordan's Presentation of Arkansas Recreation and Parks
Association Awards:
• Fayetteville Community Gardens (Roxanne Worthy and Lisa
Netherland): Therapeutic Recreation Program of the Year 2009
• Gulley Stream Restoration with Watershed Conservation
Resource Center (Carole Jones, Sandi Formica and Matt Van
Eps): Natural Resource Project of the Year 2009
• Cindi Cope: Volunteer of the Year 2009
• Soccer Kickoff Program (Tiffany Gaulke): Sports Management
Program of the Year 2009
2. Approval of February 1, 2010 PRAB Meeting Minutes
PRAB Motion: Mauritson motioned to approve the minutes as
written, and Biendara seconded it. Motion passed 9-0-0 by voice
vote.
3. Botanical Garden Annual Report: Walt Eilers, BGSO Board
President
Rae von Holdt, the Executive Director of the Botanical Gardens, gave the
report in place of Walt Eilers. The BGSO Board will be looking for new
sponsors, and developing new events. A year long marketing and promotion
strategy will be devised and launched. A Volunteer Committee will be
developed. They are talking to ORT about having a regular stop at the
gardens.
Meinecke asked about the current total membership.
Van Holdt said that she wasn't sure of the exact number.
Edmonston said the gardens are becoming more and more popular,
especially for weddings. They do a tremendous job.
Mauritson said that it is a great idea to tie in with ORT.
Edmonston commented that van Holdt brings a lot of knowledge and
expertise to the gardens.
PRAB Motion: Hatfield motioned to accept BGSO's annual report,
and Mauritson seconded it. Motion passed 8-0-0 by voice vote.
4. BGSO Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Representative: Meets
3rd Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. every odd month
Edmonston said PRAB is expected to have a representative on the
committee.
Hatfield asked for a volunteer to accept the responsibility, or maybe have a
revolving system. He asked for any other ideas if no one liked the first two.
Meinecke said he like the revolving system idea.
Hatfield wanted to know how long the meetings lasted.
Van Holdt said they tried to keep them to 90 minutes.
Lindsey said that he would commit to going to the meetings as a PRAB
representative.
5. 2009 Annual Report: Connie Edmonston, Parks & Recreation
Director
According to Article II, Chapter 33.018 (B) in the Fayetteville Code of
Ordinances, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is to prepare an
annual report to City Council. This report is included in the
attachments. Once approved by PRAB, this document will be
forwarded to the City Council.
This item was tabled at the February 1 meeting to allow more time
for review.
PRAB Staff Recommendation: To approve the 2009 Annual Report
to be presented to PRAB.
Hatfield said that there were a couple of small changes that were made.
The revised report link was emailed to everybody.
Meldrum asked how the pool attendance looks when calculated day by day.

Edmonston said that it looks very good.
PRAB Motion: Mauritson motioned to accept the Parks and
Recreation Annual Report, and Waite seconded it. Motion passed 8-
0-0 by voice vote.
6. Other Business:

Trail

Mauritson commented that there was a presentation on the Butterfield
Trail at the Town Center later that day from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Van Holdt said that if the weather was bad, the refreshments would be at
the garden.
Humphry announced that the house at Gulley Park has been torn down. It
took about 10 minutes for the demolition.
Edmonston said there are plans to build a pavilion with a fireplace there.
Hatfield announced that he was stepping down as the chairman of PRAB.
He is pursuing other professional opportunities.
Edmonston commented that he has left his mark with the City. She said
she's sorry to see him go.
Mauritson said it was a pleasure to have served with you.
Edmonston said that Parks will let the City Clerk know of the vacancy.
Biendara commented
that
she's
glad
the
geocaching at Lake Wilson went
through
Edmonston.
That's
the
best
way
to do
it.
Edmonston commented that Parks will add a couple of benches at the
Butterfield Trail. She is looking for some old stagecoach wheels for the
benches. Wells Fargo is helping.
7. Adjournment
Meeting was adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
