MINUTES OF A MEETING
OF THE
PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
OCTOBER 17, 2000
PRESENT: Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members Eads, Shoulders, Thiel; City staff Edmonston,
Schuldt; Press, and Audience.
The Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Division hosted a public meeting on Tuesday, October 17, 2000 at 5:30 p.m.
at Red Oak Park located at intersection of Cheyenne and Lonesome Dove, Fayetteville, Arkansas. The meeting
was held to solicit input on the development of the park located in the Bridgeport, Willow Springs, and Fieldstone
subdivisions.
Staff Presentation: Brenda Thiel introduced the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members and
Park Staff in attendance. Connie Edmonston gave the history of Red Oak Park, including acreage, land
acquisition information and current funding available for capital improvements.
I1. Citizen Comments: Listed below are a list of suggestions provided by the neighborhood:
• Do it right the first time. Wait until you have the money to develop the park the correct way.
• Provide increase access to all areas of the park.
• Provide activities or facilities that will assist with getting the children off the streets.
• Construct multi-purpose walking trails connecting all three areas of the park. Design the trail for
bikers, walkers, and runners. The neighbors would like to see a hard -surface trail because similar
trails are not available on their side of town.
• Provide a children's playground. A playground of similar size to the large playground at Wilson
park.
• Purchase park signage. The lack of signage has led to confusion about park ownership and
boundaries.
• Provide park swings, benches, picnic tables, and grills.
• Purchase soccer and/or basketball goals.
• Construct a wall to be utilized for "waliball". Wallball is a game played by the neighborhood
children.
• Other concerns expressed: existing trail conditions, drainage, and park name.
