LAKE FAYETTEVILLE SOUTH PARK PUBLIC MEETING
JUNE 22, 1993
6:30 pm
PRAB Present: Driver, Waite, Wright
Staff Present: Clark, Cox, Edmonston
Guests Present: See attached list
Media Present: Ron Wood -Morning News
Bill Waite welcomed the public and introduced PRAB and staff.
He informed the public that the Parks Department is applying for a
matching funds grant from the Arkansas Outdoors Recreation Grant
Program. It could take two to three years to receive the grant.
The 'purpose for this meeting is to receive input for the
development of the park.
COMMENTS:
Public = P
P : A simple shower would be great. An open shower is the
best. This way we could leave the sand here instead of
taking it home with us.
P : An enclosed playground for small children would be great.
Clem Johnson: This is a map of the existing courts. The Ozark
Volleyball Club would like tosee another sand court or
grass court. We could make temporary grass courts so
they could still be mowed around. We also had a plan for
a half court for children to use. We would have to take
the nets down every day.
Driver: Can you leave durable nets up for kids all the time?
Clark: No, we have found it is better to take down after use.
P : Could we get a lock box for the nets so we can keep them
here?
P : People that picnic and volleyball have to go back and
forth. These things need to be more centrally located.
P : The new volleyball league is going really good.
Waite: We would like to finish the jogging trail. We want it to
start and stop here.
P : In Oregon, they had trails for walking and biking both.
They were asphalt trails.

Gulley Park was developed for running, but asphalt is not
designed for running. If runners want to run on asphalt,
they will just hit the street instead of driving to
Gulley Park.
Does it matter how long the trail is, or just the
surface?
Yes, it needs to be two or three miles. Gulley Park is
like a golfer going to a three par golf course.
Gulley Park is over utilized. That is why we want to
develop this trail.
This trail will need to be an all weather trail with
proper drainage.
What surface?
Wood chips are low maintenance and last forever. With
this trail, you would see cross country teams from all
over, so it would need to be wide enough for three
people.
Does it need to be bordered to contain the chips?
It depends on the terrain, but probably not.
We have been trying to cut off the drive so that people
cannot drive all the way around the park.
Yes, people like to drive around and squeal their tires.
This is not safe for the children.
We need to make two y's so people have to turn around.
Alexander:What is happening with the larger pavilion?
Clark:
Waite:
P:
Clark:
We would like to accommodate 200 people with a larger
pavilion. This would also be a perfect place for the
Youth Center Daycamp to utilize.
We want to preserve open space, so the pavilion would
need to go by the existing one.
Why not just build two more small ones?
People want a large pavilion so they can keep their group
together. This for events such as reunions, company
picnics, etc.

Why isn't the lake used for swimming?
We are not sure of the water quality. There are houses
with septic tanks close, and we don't want to risk it.
Is there a possibility of lights for night games? It is
much cooler to play then.
With the women's U of A volleyball team starting, we will
see more interest in the sport.
We will have to think of the placement of the lights.
Remember we look up a lot.
Alexander:A running track and volleyball would be an excellent
mixture of sports.
I wonder if the U of A would help with grant writing fees
or something?
Driver:
O'Meara:
There are a lot of runners here.
Fayetteville to run. We go to Pea
to use their trails.
We do not meet in
Ridge or Bella Vista
Alexander:How about finding a corporate sponsor?
Fennell is a runner.

needs to be widened, but it is a good start.
I like the trail narrow like it is now.
Yes, but it eliminates other runners.
Springdale runners use the area. Is there a way to get
funds from Springdale?
No that probably would not be possible.
Scott-Silkwood: Can you set priorities? I need them for the grant.

A fence might disturb the deer.
Constant runners might disturb the wildlife.
Can't we just stay on this side of the lake with the
trail?

To get a five mile trail, we have to go around the lake.
We would stay on the lake side of the fence.
We have a list of priorities from the Ozark Volleyball
Club.
How are the bathrooms?
They have been locked lately, and I do not like to walk
all the way over there.
Should we consider events for people
Trail. (horseshoes, maybe)
from Butterfield
Alexander:Shuffleboard is popular in Florida.
P : Another idea is a gardening club that could create a wild
flower trail.
P : Would the trail accommodate walkers and joggers?
P : Will it need to be handicap accessible?
Scott-Silkwood: Everything needs to be. Making the trails
accessible also will give more points for the grant.
Alexander:I would like to add basketball courts at the bottom of
the priority list. They need to be in a remote area, not
right in the middle. There are a lot of places people
play basketball now that are less beautiful than here.
Waite: It is not just the basketball courts, it is where they
are located. Some courts are over used now, while others
are not. (example: Root) The courts need to be on a
well traveled route.
Stephen Zisner: We need better signage for the park. People don't
know where it is or where to turn.
Alexander:Many people think of Lake Fayetteville as being the
softball fields. Many do not even know of the south
side. Maybe if there were a sign, it would be more
known.
P : West Campus made a pretty sign for them. Maybe they
could make one here.
P : It might be a good idea to rename the park. The title
now is too long.
Edmonston:At one time, we had discussed naming it Dogwood Park.
Lake Fay South Page 5
Alexander:How big would the pavilion be? It might accommodate
shuffleboard.
Clark: About the size of Agri Park pavilion.
O'Meara: Fayetteville is the number one running community in the
state, and it is a shame we do not have a facility. A
good facility would be used by our community and others
year around.
P: What about training stations?
O'Meara: I do not use them, and many others don't either. People
do not like to stop and go while jogging. They are
better if they are all in one place.
Alexander:What happened with the railway system?
Scott-Silkwood: Planning has written a grant for that.
O'Meara: They are more ideal for bikers, not runners.
P: Do people have weddings here?
Clark: Yes
Alexander:I got married here. Bob Emerson Park is a suggestion for
a new name. He really got volleyball started here. He
was on the Parks Board.
Waite: I prefer names that are not named after anyone.
The meeting adjourned at 7:20 pm.
