II. SHERMAN LOLLAR LITTLE LEAGUE
Pete Jenkins, president of the Little League, presented
a Little League report on this season. The League had over
900 hours of volunteer work. Walker Park has 6 lighted
fields. The sixth field was lighted this year. Due to
limited fields, the 6 year old teams were cut in 1989..
There are 48 teams and play began in early April. Jenkins
proposed the idea of the 6 and 7 year olds using the new
soccer area in Walker Park North for a multi-purpose field
beginning next year. The teams could use portable fencing
and equipment. Jenkins also requested that the Parks Board
view land across the ditch on the west end of Walker for a
parking area. The PRAB facilities committee will review the
two proposals and report back.
III. LEVERETT PTO
Parents from the Leverett PTO were present to request that
the Parks Department purchase the land north of Leverett
Elementary School. The property is a trust owned by Mrs.
Parsons. Currently, it is being considered by a local
restaurant that serves alcohol. The parents are against
this idea. The school cannot afford to purchase this land
themselves. The PTO suggested the land be purchased as a
park and kept as a nature park. The Board will review the
proposal. The realtor's prices on this land range from
3350,000 to $449,000. This park is not on the Parks Master
Plan. The PTO has approached Mrs. Parsons to see if the
PRAB Page 2
land could be donated and will be contacting her again.
The PTO requested the Parks Board to recommend to the
Planning Commission not to rezone the area for commercial
use.
MOTION:ROBERTSON/ALEXANDER
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board recommends to the
Planning Commission to table the rezoning until a decision
can be reached on either purchasing or donating the land
North of Leverett School. for a park.
MOTION APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY 8-0
IV. PARKS TOUR
The Parks Board continued business in the van. Ryan read
the new green space ordinance. The first stop was Jerry
Sweetser's property connected to Gulley Park. Sweetser took
the Board on a tour of the creek land from Country Way to
Azalea Terrace. The Board also viewed the land adjacent to
Leverett Elementary School that was proposed to be a nature
park by the PTO. The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
