DRAWER F 72701 1e011 521.7700 PRAB MEETING Minutes March 8, 1983 The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board came to order at 4:05 pm at the Continuing Education building. MINUTES: Minutes were approved as mailed. BUSINESS: 1. Long -Range Planning Presentation to the City Board: The PRAB presentation to the City Board of Directors was postponed to Tuesday, March 29th at 4:30 pm, Room 107 Continuing Education. 2. Garden Club: George Knight was contacted by Julie Nash with the Garden Club Council wishing to donate some money into the parks. The Garden Club invited PRAB to attend their meeting held on Tuesday, March 29 at 9%3Oam, City Library to discuss the possibilities. It was the consensus of the PRAB that Wilson Park was the first priority in their long-range plans for the need of landscaping. The PRAB discussed that it was important to have a professional landscape design of the park and that they needed to be careful as to what they plant to consider maintenance and what will grow as well as to the aesthetic beauty. In summary, the PRAB said that the following should be emphasized at the Garden Club meeting: landscape professional plan - maintenance - beautification - horticulturist. Beverly Melton will attend the meeting. Connie Edmonston visited with Ed Schwitzer from the Landscape Department of the University of Arkansas, who had expressed his concern for master plans of the parks and their long range plans. Connie will set a meeting with Mr. Schwitzer and Beverly Melton for discussion. 3. Work Groups: Connie Edmonston reported that she has sent over one hundred letters to University fraternities, sororities, residential halls, and student organizations asking for their help in a service project to the park department in preparation for the summer programs. Phi Delta Theta fraternity has already volunteered their services on Saturday, March 5th. Ten fraternity members helped paint Lake Fayetteville North Shore site park. Bob Braswell devised a list of work projects for these university groups. Beverly Melton suggested taking pictures of each work group. Page 2 PRAB March 8, 1983 FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS F. 0. Swimming Pool Report: Beverly Melton discussed with the PRAB about having a mural contest for the swimming pool's blank wall that is facing the pool on the dressing rooms. The contest would be opened to suggestions and would include cost estimates. This could be linked to the opening of the pool in June. Funding would have to be worked out. Beverly Melton and Frank Rackerby will work on the specifics of the contest. 5. United Fund Kickoff: Beverly Melton reported that the United Fund is planningtheir kickoff on Labor Day at Wilson Park. There will be five different games and contest in which teams participate. All United Fund agencies are required to help with the events and to have a table display. 6. Walker Park North: Connie Edmonston reported that the City's Planning Commission approved for on -street parking on Block Street (one side) with the stipulation that off-street parking be provided within two years. PRAB is planning on CD to build basketball/parking on the Naval Reserve existing parking lot assoon as arrangements are made. 7. Autumnfest: Connie Edmonston reported that Autumnfest will take place.. on September 30,.Oct 1 and 2. The Parks Department is participating in the Autumnfest by providing the following events: Pet Contest, Bicycle Decoration Contest, Trolley cars of kids to ride, Magic Show, School Art Contest, Children's Theatre Production, Little Mr. & Ms. Autumnfest Contest, and Picture with the tame lion. Edmonston is working on the specifics for each event and will present them to the PRAB at the next Board meeting. 8. Lake Sequoyah House: Connie Edmonston reported that she was contacted by a couple interested in living in the house at Lake Sequoyah. Money was proposed in the Parks budget for renovation of the house. The Board asked Edmonston to find out if CD money could be used to help upgrade the house at Lake Sequoyah and also at Lake Wilson. 9. Wells Fargo Grant: Rodney Ryan reported that Wells Fargo provides $2500 in grant money for construction of a fitness/obstacle course. Further information is being requested for the grant. The PRAB discussed the possibility of the course at Walker Park North, Washington Mountain, and Gregory Park. FAYETTEITILLE, ARKANSAS Page 3 PRAB March 8, 1983 P. 0.
