DRAWER F 72701 1501) 521.7700 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD TOUR OF PARKS Tuesday, October 27, 1981 PRESENT: Lashley, Melton, Reagan, Clark, Waite WILSON Six new tennis nets in place. Two footbridges in bad shape. - Dale wants arched cement bridges to replace three, with one high and one low handrail. Possibility of eliminating east footbridge or preserving it because it is old. - Bleachers in good shape but will not move well. - Rock wall and stairs south of pool in poor shape. - Old-time cement hitching post on south side -- reported by citizen. - Request for jogging trail from Walker to U of A. - Some dead trees. - Problem with young people gathering and drinking is improving. Probably due to police surveillance. GREGORY - Cable and post barrier in the works. - Parking lot needs cleaned up; remove dead trees and some brush. - Car has been in pavillion and knocked one wall section out. - Rock walls around trees on Sycamore Avenue cracked. - Beverly suggested more PR for this park. ASBELL E Small tree dead. Fenced play area for small children needed near concession stand under trees. - Need complete fence barrier to prevent vehicles going there. - Neighbors say our flat area causes them to flood. David will communicate to Street Department. May be a ditch problem. ASBELL W - Soccer fields are not level Have had some complaints. Only solution is haul in dirt. - Roof repair, west side dugout, needs re -doing. - Child hit with car in after-school congestion behind Asbell School. - David says we need park land in 16 W. area west of Bypass. Beverly says. three acres near Ozarks Electric available for $25,000. • GREATHOUSE - Problem with vehicle barrier behind Levi -- in 1982 CD. - We need a good serviceable bridge. • WALKER - We have serious doubts about placement and use of handball court (in process, CD). - Baseball people moving some fence. - New bathroom foundation dug. - Beverly and Dale think bridge over stream to west and pavillion and gazebo are needed; also play equipment and picnic tables. Clear ditch by hand. Problem with no bathrooms. Tentative price $50,000. WALKER N - Bill says we can easily get four good soccer fields (Bakke & Kennedy support), maybe even lighted -- and two adult size softball. Soccer people have two concepts, one with a center, one with fields spread out. Theywant eight fields. BABE RUTH - New parking area looks fine. - People dumping trash. - We need posts and cables to keep vehicles in limited areas. Urgent for the winter. - One scoreboard torn up. - Looks like we need chat and vehicle barrier on north side of road. - Culvert under road needs narking. - Dale would like 2 adult softball fields out on Industrial Park land instead of 'Walker N. Very expensive. - David suggests large first class baseball field for that area -- long range. At•IERICAN LEGION All we do is mow. David says it would be ideal if this land were given to Parks and Recreation. Ho lights. David suggests buying the field with CD. November agenda item'? He will pursue Also playground and picnic tables. Looks like field is in poor repair and program is going downhill. David suggests advising Shafer or Kennedy that soccer practice field is available. Bill will expedite. David reports he has requested to City Board for $1,500 for engineering study for Walker N (Ervin Wimberly) preliminary. JEFFERSON - Park looks neat, gets good use. - Dale says we don't need five acres for neighborhood park. Maybe two acres and play equipment needs to be spaced close to get good use. - Bill suggests enlargement and improvement of basketball area at Jefferson and with parking in Walker N. - Dale says the status quo is optimum. REMINDER: Swimming Pool Committee Meeting, Thursday, 3:30 p.m., at City Hall.
