DRAWER F 72701 [5011 521-7700 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD Monday, July 6, 1981 1:30 p.m. Present: Thomason, Reagan, Widder, Knight, Clark • Minutes of June 8 approved as written. / Minutes of June 19th Special Meeting Swimming Pool approved. V/ David has asked Bill to prioritize items of improvement we found on both parks tours. /1 David sent memo to Grimes asking status of CD eligibility determinations i for Washington Mountain and Asbell. Bids for 1980 CD projects came in 100,000 under. George suggests we speak up_at tomorrow nights City Board and ask for items that were deleted in our askings.' — Fayetteville Soccer Association - Paul Shafer, Tom Kennedy expects to have 450 youngsters in this spring. Big need seems to be fields -- they need nine or ten. Have their eye on our undeveloped new Walker Park land. David asks - has the survey been done - no. Seabees will do their work. Dale suggests our board serve as agent to get heavy equipment from city or county. George says we need to have a plan. • Motion by Knight to give Fayetteville Soccer Association our approval to go ahead and make an engineering survey of seven acres for whole or partial development as soccer fields. We will go to City Board for approval. Dale says we must keep softball needs in mind. George says why not use Happy Hollow. Seabees are waiting on permission for limited landclearing to get survey instru- ments in. Shafer says needs of eight or nine fields will be in addition to present fields at Asbell. David asks for better use of school fields. Kennedy says we must not pass up offer from Seabees to clear and improve the Walker land. Reagan seconded. Unanimous. David says we can use Seabees labor to ask for CD money. If we go for CD it will be a much slower process. Dale says we can get an amendment to 80 CD and facilitate funding. David asks that the Seabees person in charge of work at Walker come before this board and keep in close touch. • • Shafer says Seabees survey and Fayetteville Soccer Association can come up with a master plan - with restrooms, concession, parking. One cent sales tax -- we question withdrawing the 15% for parks after swimming pool completion. David will request that parks be given 15% without stipulation. 2. Approval of HCRS grant for swimming pool. Our Swimming Pool Committee is doting a lot of work -- modifying plans -- one strong opinion is that present pool can be renovated. 3. Nominations for this board. 4. Aware of bids for CD at Walker. Dale: Lake Fayetteville complete -- playing 15 games a night. Asbell construction starts today on parking lot/basketball -- Dale wants holes around concession stand filled. Babe Ruth work going ahead well. Allen Beauchamp conducting tennis tournament. David spoke to Harold Johnson about modifying water fountains so sand can be cleaned out. Romey complained NW soccer field at Asbell is poorly drained in this wet weather. David wrote letter to editor of NW Arkansas Times speaking about public responsibility in preventing vandalism and maintaining parks. dAlearti We are looking for someone to close✓gate at Lake Wilson.
