PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
Monday, April 6, 1981 at 1:30 p.m.
Present: Lashley, Waite, Widder, Reagan, Clark, Ryan
Minutes of March 2, 1981 approved.
Wendy Scott of Board of Strikers Soccer Club requests use of parks and city soccer
fields for an annual tournament May 23-24. This inv'olves use of goals, nets,
concessions stands. Approximately 1,000 participants and families will be in
our city.
No apparent conflict with our soccer season. Strikers have approval of Fayetteville
Soccer Association. Ramay, Woodland, Harmon practice fields under parks jurisdiction
during A.M.J.J.A. Fayetteville Soccer Association is an alternate group that
F.P.R.A.B. is attempting to work with. Continuing Education works with any group
needing housing and facilities for conferences and tournaments on campus and in
our city.
Bill had questions about basic set-up of this tournament: will highly competitive
teams be pitted against teams (such as Youth Center) that play mainly for recreation.
Samir Hav responded that every team has option to play in tournament and operate
under rules intended to equalize the problem Bill spoke of.
David said he has no quarrel with this use of our facilities, that it promulgates
our principle of recreational facilities for the use of all.
Motion by Waite to permit Strikers use of Woodland, Asbell, Ramay, Harmon practice
field. Second by Widder. Unanimous.
Beth Hollingsworth dt V. Div. Cont. Ed. is person to contact with any problems on
this tournament.
Georgia Haridopolis from Senior Babe Ruth (16-18), July 20-24 requests help. Make
improvements prior to state tournament gravel for parking and roads, $2,000,
speedbreakers, picnic tables, 45 trees at $18 each. David suggests these trees get
dug from wooded park land. That we consider asking city to help pave parking lot.
If SB2 were used it could be regarded as Phase I toward paving David suggests
consultation with McClinton about type of gravel, asks Mrs. Haridopolis to
formulate specific requests with costs and prioritize thein for us to present to
City Board. David suggests letting parking area go for now and create railroad
tie barrier to block it off. Dale says our agreement with Babe Ruth is only for
• $2,000, $1,200 for a man and $800 for extras. Barrier for E parking area 1,200 feet
at $1 per foot, three picnic tables at 150, three large trees transplanted, gravel
for E parking, walkways, N parking.

Dale says we need to move on this matter to get the feeling of the tennis players
in this city for such a program.

restrooms; 2) hut for resting and changing clothes; 3) more tournaments. Rodney
suggests we use proposed new pool dressing room for tennis people. David asks,
are not we dedicated to providing FREE tennis facilities. Dale says there is a
big need/demand for youth and adult tennis instructions. Rodney says we should
be considering the impact of the University of Arkansas athlete center which will
have many tennis courts and is in process right now. Alan asks for an open meeting
to sound.our tennis interest. David gave Rodney this job.
Dale says FHS will be taking two top tennis courts for a new gym. Suggests we
have input on location of new courts. Alan suggests locating then where Bates
