DRAWER F V-/ 1y 0 n,\ 72701 PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD Semi.Annual Tour of Parks May 9, 1930--12:30 p.m. 1501) 521.7700 Lashley, Waite, Knight, Reagan, Clark (Ryan, Brinner-and Widder made part of \ the tour). :` \WILSON PARK 'Environmental Sculpture Garden 1) We need to clean out ditch north of the castle instead of building a 63e---- wall i`!wall as planned. 2) We need a steel reinforced concrete retaining wall on the west side of the east ditch extending down to the rocks. We also need to widen the ditch. The old entrance pillar near city pool needs removal. The cornerstone has historical value and we should use it someplace in Wilson Park. The gas line on top of the ground on the south side of the pool area is broken. Gi We have to replace. Dale is going to ask Arnold Christie for help. GREGORY PARK 1) Dale suggests a circular table around the center pole in the pavilion. 2) The wood on the lower inside boards of the pavilion is eaten away. 3) We need to block the access from the parking lot into the park. ASBELL EAST 1) The paved area at the southeast corner (with $2O,00n CD) is tco soft now to park on. 2) Just west of this parking area is the new softball field for "young people" - it has a substantial slope in the outfield. 3) The proposed fence across to dugout from the south should prevent thru traffic. 4) Vent in the Womens restroom is bashed in good 5) Bleacher area is very trashy. ASBELL GYM - 1) Insulation covering is peeling off - some leaking of roof 2) Dale says all restrooms and dressing rooms need replacing -present floor is slippery and unsafe - we need an air lock entrance- more spectator room. 3) Concensus: we need a plan. George suggested Don Hunnicut to come to the next board meeting and we brainstorm. P&R Tour (cont.) -2 • LAKE FAYETTEVILLE SOUTH 1) A new light pole broken off by an automobile. Dale wants to reinforce these lightpoles up to car height with iron pipe. 2) Pavilion is okay. 3) Restrooms are awful our classic problem. 4) The bricked.in water fountain is working fine. (Dale's idea) 5) The lights stay on all night. With our commitment to save energy, we need to consider a timer. Problem is preventing vandalism. • • LAKE FAYETTEVILLE NORTH - Softball Field 1) Problem with golf range and our two new proposed fields (the man says we will put him out of business). 2) Consensus is to lay out field and proceed. 3) David says we should install a backstop and use the field this season - dust and all. LAKE FAYETTEVILLE NORTH - Pavilion Area 1) We get monthly water bill from Springdale for the north pavilion. David thinks we should be in communication with Springdale on this. 2) The entire area is overrun with vehicle tracks. 3) Woodpeckers are eating at the pavilion. George suggests future pavilions be made out of something less edible. 4) Bathrooms are awful. 5) We should mow open play area (from road to pavilion) more often. 6) David recommends that Dale refer picnic groups to this area. 7) Backstop needed here? 8) Dale thinks we gave Fayetteville and Springdale schools too much land and too much free rein in the Environmental Studies Center commitment (50 years). 9) Tom has spoken to a person interested in developing a archery group. He will report back to us on this - the old archery range is overgrown - needs security fencing. ROUTH PARK 1) Has two cement picnic tables and benches. Do we need parking? SWEEETBRIAR PARK 1) Perfect example of a neighborhood park (except for segments of cement culvert rolling on toes). BUTTERFIELD PARK - Romey was here to help us. 1) Pavilion doors are locked - need to consider a staff person here. 2) Walls are insulated. 3) New play equipment is getting good usage. 4) Can get one soccer, one softball field in area south of pavilion - need to do a lot of dirt work. 5) Need to move backstop. Fence people working at Asbell 5-12-80 can be asked to do this. 6) Contact schools to repair benches and tables and trash cans. PER Tour (cont.) - ROOT PARK 1) The pavilion is in good shape. The floor needs lining. Staff person is needed, 2) The field could be used for softball practice, but not soccer. 3) Move the backstop to the west end. NO NAME PARK We found it! Not accessible by vehicle. George will walk it and report back to the board. HAPPY HOLLOW 1) The pavilion is in beautiful shape .- a new door for vehicle access. Staff person needed here. BABE RUTFI 1) Some new commercial signs are on outfield fence. Dale says he will talk to Whit Hensman. We need to establish some policy. 2) $500 monthly minimum of lights in first field - sounds high. Dale will request SWEPCO to separate this charge out. WALKER PARK 1) Sweet gums on south line are alive. 2) CD is negotiating to pave and curb S. Block to E. 13th. GREATHOUSE PARK 1) Our application for grant from Levi -Strauss failed. 2) We need a basketball goal and asphalt area here. 3) We need to pursue ownership of four acres usurped by Kenneth Easterling. LAKE WILSON 1) One drain (west side of tower) cannot be closed. 2) Lake can rise 8 to 10 feet before going over spillway. At that time we need to work on making spillway permanent. 3) City work on hauling trash and covering trash on north face of dam is a great improvement. E. Reagan
