Wooten, Ben Winborn, David Lashley, Rodney Ryan

The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, David Lashley.
Yr. Clark reported that the equipment was already installed for circulating
the water in the shallow end of the City Swimming Pool. The problem is

Mr. Sutton brought a copy of the letter which he sent out to the various
industries in Fayetteville requesting financial assistance with the proposed
gymnasium. Mr. Sutton said that Fulbright Enterprises have donated $1,000,
Mr. Winborn said that he and Mr. Vandergrif, Faygtteville Schools Superinten-
dent, had gone to Asbell School to discuss the site for the gymnasium. Mr.
Vandergrif had requested that the building be directly behind Asbell School
if there were no objections from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board,
Mr. Ryan said that he had called the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation and talked
to Mr. Willbanks. rfr. Willbanks said that he will be in this area in the
next 2 weeks and that he would get in touch with the Board at that time. t•Ir,
• Ryan asked him to send an application to fill out for a grant. Mr. Willbanks
informed him that small projects would be considered as well as large ones.

that he had received a petition with
about 260 names on
it from the
people
in the Oberman Park area requesting that
this area be
developed..

other end of it.
Mr. Lashley said that the ones who signed the petition had only requested a
ball diamond in the park and a street light to help police the area, Mr,
Lashley estisated that the cost of a street light would be about $4.50 a
month and said that the cost for the City would be less. The members
discussed putting putting a couple of cement picknic tables in the park
since there are some extras.
Mr. Winborn moved that $300 be designatedto develop Oberman Park. The
motion was seconded by Mr. Ryan and was approved unanimously.
Mr. Lashley suggested getting a topographical map of the Oberman Park area
so the mer:bers could better plan the development. MLI C � aid -that he
would tall,_ with Shirley Thornsberry, Building and rounds Superintendent,
to see what ideas he had and also check with him to see if the Building
and Grounds Department is planning to put a foot bridge across the creek
running through the Park.
The naming of Oberman Park was discussed. Mrs. Broyles suggested letting
• the people living in the area of the park rare it.

stated that if the $200 were spent, there would be only $100 left, iso
vote was taken on this motion.
Dir. Hirborn suggested that Dir. Clark go around to all the schools explaining
the summer recreation program to the students. 7dr. Lashley suggested that
he also find out 4o:r many are interested and what kind of programs they are
interested in.
Mr. Clark said that the Good Shepherd•Church would let the City use six
acres of their property in turn for leveling the property.
Dir. Winborn mentioned that Butterfield School is right across the street
from the church and could be developed in this way.
If programs are developed both at Butterfield and Oberman Park some volunteer
help may have to be used.

There was a discussion on the lack of participation at Jefferson School and
what could be done about this.
Mark. Kruger, pool manager, was present at the meeting to ask some questions
on the SiriMYing Pool. policy.
Dir. Kruger asked if the shift of the lifeguards could be split in the case
• that the shift lasted 10 or 12 hours. The members agreed that he should
take care of this in a way that was convenient for the lifeguards.
Dir. Kruger also stated that the lifeguards had been asking for a raise from
their salary of $1.25 an hour.
liembers agreed that $1.2.5 an hour t;•as not enough pay for the lifeguards and
that they would like to give thein a raise if the money was in the budget.
It was agreed that the regular salary would be paid until the pool closing
and that any money left over in the budget for salaries would be divided
and given to the guards in a lump siinj
Mrs. Broyles made a motion that the fee for 'Teen Swim" be raised from 10
cents to 25 cents with the exception of those ..ith season tickets, Who :;ould
get in free. The motion was seconded by Miss 'rlooten exd approved unanimously.
Dr. Winborn stated that he feels the number of swimmers in the pool should
be limited to the pools capacity and the number of life guards that are on
duty.
1•:r. Kruger stated that he had had some problems zrith dicipline the year
before and asked the nLembers ho -..r they felt about this. 'Ir. 41inborn
said that he thought the ones who caused an^e-.:co s amouni of troutle
should be made to leave the pool and get Mr. Clark's pcimissi.on to be
allowed back in the pool.
• It was decided that season tickets for the pool will be sold befor:: the
pool opening in order to avoid the rush during the first week the pool
is open.
• A $35 rate vras set for family season tickets.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:00 P.M.
