April 21 1970 1:00 p.m.
Members Present: Margaret Wooten, Rodney Ryan, David Lashley, Claude
Sutton, Barbara Broyles, Dale Clark, Ben Winborn,
Bill Brannon.
The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, David Lashley.
Mr. Lashley stated that Yr. Strohmeyer of the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation
had come by to see him. t•1re Strohmeyer stated that he would meet with the
Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to discuss Park Planning. It was
decided by the members to set up a meeting with Mr. Strohmeyer at his
convenience.
A discussion was held on whether the softball teams should be under the
City's supervision or whether the teams should be seperate.
The girls softball team wanted to put lights in, with the City paying half
the cost of putting them in. One member said that if the girls softball
team put the lights in, that they might want exclusive rights to the park
when they wanted to use it.
Mr. Ryan asked if the City could subsidize putting in the lights with the
• agreement that the City can use the park when the girls team is not using
I it.
\' Mr. Lashley stated that he did not think that Parks and Recreation had the
money for the lights.
Mr. Winborn said that he feels the City should help with the coordination
of the softball program and the use of the facilities.
Mr. Winborn suggested that the girls team make their fund drive to get
money for the lights and tell -them that if we can at all we will help.
Mr. Ryan made a motion that the Parks F
dcreation Departmentwouldhelpany wpossible in guidance and coordating the softball program. Themotion was seconded by 2•`ss. Broyles, anapproved unanimously.
The meeting was recessed at 2:30 p.m. to reconvene at the City Park. An
inspection of the tennis courts, basketball court, swimming pool, dressing
rooms, etc, was made by members of the commission.
t•1 It was noted that the fence project around the tennis courts area is being
completed. The estimated cost of their project started in 1966 is $1,100
Q with $700 already paid.
The Board agreed that the courts were in good enough condition that work on
them could be delayed.

After consulting with Mr. Thornsberry, Dale Clark was asked to investigate
the feasability and estimated cost of installing a filtered rater inlet at
• the shallow end of the pool. It was also noted that some additional clean
up and painting will be needed before opening the pool for summer use.
\\ Benny Winborn was asked to contact all civic clubs and appraise them of
the "Gym Project" and the need for additional cash. This is to be done
during the next week,
The meeting was adjourned at 3:05 at the City Park.

l• Advisory Board meeting there was some discussion about
1 tennis court nets and th€k-fence at the tennis court.
It is my opinion that money allocated for tennis court
r ^S! remodeling in the 1970 Budget could be used for rebuild-
\` \ ing the fence around the tennis courts,
Mr. Shirley Thornberry, Superintendent of Buildings and
Grounds, is in charge of maintaining the tennis courts
and overseeing improvements to them, In view of this,
I request that you set up a meeting with Mr. Thornberry
and with David Lashley, Chairman of the Parks and Recrea-
tion Advisory Board, to reach an understanding as to what
is to be done.
Shirley will report to me for approval if I need to approve
any action the group concludes should be taken,
Thank you,
cc: Shirley 'ihornberry
David Lashley
