Board of Trustees Building Expansion Meeting August 16, 1999
•
Trustees present were M. Thomas, S. Singleton, L. Brewer, M. Goff, M. Roberts, L. Gottsponer
/and M. Lawrence. Staffmembers present were L. Schaper and M. Saxon. Members of the press
present were Chantal Rice (NWA Times), Charlie Allison (MN) and Laura Kellams (AR Dem.
Gazette).
M. Thomas called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m.
1. M. Goff moved and L. Gottsponer seconded a motion to approve the minutes from July 19. All
voted aye.
2. Feasibility study update was given by L. Schaper. Two additional proposals have been
received including one from Advanced Partners and one from Community Counselling
Services. This is in addition to the one from the North Group. She said she thought the
proposal from CCS was interesting given their experience with libraries. It was agreed that she
would ask each to submit a proposal for campaign counsel and invite all three to come meet
the Board at their expense.
3. Land acquisition: L. Schaper said the City Attorney's office was working on an option to buy
agreement with WRMC. One lot was still under City Hospital's name and WRMC had to
address that situation. The agreement when ready will be presented to City Council.
4. Geotechnical investigations: L. Brewer investigated the possibility of the UA assisting us on the
geotechnical investigations. She spoke to professors in civil engineering. It would not be
enough of a project for a senior project and someone would still have to pay a local firm to do
the borings. Also, it would not be appropriate for the UA to compete with local firms. It would
I be important to work in concert with the architect on where to do the borings. Professor Larry
Plieman said that we could speak with Sam Thornton (521-1331) about his knowledge of the
local geography of the site.
5. Architects: L. Schaper said the contract with Meyer Scherer and Rockcastle is being
negotiated and we should know something in a month.
6. Sign-up supporter sheets: L. Schaper distributed sign-up sheets and asked the Trustees to ask
their friends and neighbors if they support the new main library and if so put their name on the
sheets. Names are being entered in a database. Building expansion newsletters are being
distributed to those in the database.
7. M. Lawrence moved and M. Goff seconded a motion to adjourn. All voted aye. The meeting
was adjoumed at 4:30 p.m.
