Public Library Association
Annual Minutes 1949
The annual meeting of the Fayetteville Public Library Association was
held on January 11,1949 in the Library rooms.Mr.MeWhorter,President of the
Association,presided.
The minutes of the meeting of the Association in 1948 were read and ap-.
proved.
The Secretary read his annual report,reviewing briefly the work of the
Library Board in administering the general work of the Library.
As the Treasurer was out of town,no report was had at this time.The an-
nual report.will be filed with these minutes when it is available.
A letter from the Secretary of the Community Chest,Miss Eleanor Quinn,
was read,stating that the Library will receive the requested sum of $4,050
in addition to designated gifts for the present year.
The Librarian,Mrs.C.B.Wiggans,gave her annual report which showed that
during 1948 the library bought 441 new books and received as gifts 127 books.
The total circulation during 1948 was 24,005,including 8,479 fiction.A total
10,580 juvenile books were circulated.She further reported that the files now
show 7,973 registered borrowers and about 19,798 volumes in the library.She
also noted during the last three months of the year an increase in the use of
the reading room,an increase in the use of current periodicals,use of refer-
bnce material,and an increase, in the number of referenceproblems brought to
the desk of the library.During the year there was am increase of 236 juvenile
and 356.adult borrowers.
The Board gave Mrs.Wiggans a vote of thanks for her efficient and faith-
ful services.
The following were elected to serve three-year terms on the Board:
Mr.D.L.Dykes,Miss Julia Vaulx,and Mr.O.W.McMillen.
The Secretary was instructed to write a letter of appreciation to
Mr.J.W.Butler,who requested to retire from the Board,for his many years of
service to the Board.
The Board requested Mr.Butler to inform Mr.Dykes of his election to the
Board.

Organizational
January 11,1949
The Library Board met just after the annual meeting of the Library Assoc-
iation to organize for the year.The meeting was called to order by the retir-
ing chairman,Mr.McWhorter.
Members present were Mr.McWhorter,Miss Vaulx,Mrs.Swartz,Mr.Greenhaw,
Mr.Blossom,and Mr.McMillen..
It was voted that the retiring officers be continued for the year 1949.
They are as follows:

and thus to the citizens of Fayetteville.We trust that you will be
joining with us again as your services have been helpful and faithful.
We appreciate the regular attendance you gave us on top of a schedule
that has always been full in connection with your worke s pastor and
member of other civic organizations.We are go�k4g to miss you this year
as we plan for the work of the Library in which"you have taken such a
keen interest in all its phases and especially in its budget needs.
Although you are not now on the Board.we should thank you for any sug-
gestions you may have at any time,£or we know that your interest in the
work of the Library will continue.

Minutes of the Library Board
January 11,1949
The Library Board held its regular meeting on January 11,1949 at 7:00 p.m.
in the Libaray rooms,Mr.MeWhorter presiding.
Members present were Mr.McWhorter,Miss Vaulx,Mrs.Swartz,Mrs.Richardson,
Mr.Meriwether,Mr.Blossom,Mr.Greenhaw,Mr.Butler,and Mr.MeMillen.The Librarian,
Mrs.Wiggans,also met with the Board.
The minutes of the meeting for December were read and approved.
The Librarians report showed a total circulation for December of 1720,
a decrease of 352 in comparison with the month before and an increase of 35
in comparison with December 1947.
The cash balance for December was $935.93.
It was voted to accept with regret the resignation of Miss Patricia Rogers
as Assistant Librarian and to instruct the secretary to write a letter of ap-
preciation for her services.
Mrs.Wiggans read her annual report to the Board.
It was voted to empower the Librarian to make such arrangements as may
be possible for assistance in the work of the Library until the Board provides
a permanent assistant.
