The circulation increased over 300 during January over any month
in 1947. It increased almost 800 over December of 1947. I
believe 1 can see an increase in leisure readers in the after-
noons also.
We have completed the re -arranging of the Library now, ahe
arrangement as it now is has been commented upon very favorably
by the patrons. The radiators were changed, and we do have.
much more room. The lighting situation has been greatly
improved also.
our next project is to start a card catalog. We will start
reading the shelves this week. As soon as we have completed our
inventory, we will order catalog cards.
Mrs. Lewis "'ebster Jones called my attention to the steps this
week. She commented that they were very dangerous and suggested
that this matter be attended to soon before someone is hurt.
Others too have suggested that they be mended.
Patricia Roers suggested recently that she will have to stay
within the ,p500 a year bracket in order that her father may
still list her as a dependent on his income tax returns. It
will probably mean that she will have to stop working for about
two months this summer. She does plan to take a trip to Mexico
this summer with a college club, but she does not know yet just
when this will be.
The readers of the Saturday Evening Post are very pleased that
we now have a subscription for it.
/ About a month ago some lady gave us six or eight novels which
V we already had copies of. I sent these to Veterans' Village
on an indefinite loan by a responsible resident of the Village.
She reports that they have been very much appreciated there,
especially by the mothers of small children. If it is permissible
I would like to continue this with other duplicate copies of
books donated to the Library which we do not need here.
/ This set of books from the International Library of Music is a
group of four books from a much larger set. The representative
was here last month with the books. Two of them give the history'
of music; one gives the history of operas; and the other gives
the history of vocal music as well as some instruction in that
field. Of the entire set I felt these would be the ones used
the most, since the others are compositions for pianists and for
violinists. The binding is of plastic and is very durable. Since
I have had mapy calls for this type of work, I believe we should
have it in the library. The set of four costs $23.85 if paid
within twenty days of delivery.
Several people have asked about a subscription to the Little Rock
gazette. If we could subscribe to it for a short period, I could
check to see if it would be wotthwhile to continue it.
The Library is truly a bureau of information. This week Ine had
a letter from California asking us to try to give them the
address or any other information of one John 'Williams of
Fayetteville. As yet we have not been able to find any informatioh
about such a person.
The new set of Americana is certainly being used. Almost every
day I use it for reference questions to the satisfaction of the
readers.
The screen at the fire escape window needs repairing. If there
were a fire T_'m afraid I couldn't do much with .the screen.
