Dear Mr. Wilson,
I am writing to you today with a sense of urgency. Having recently received more
applications for scholarship assistance than ever before, there is a dramatic need to help poor
single parents to achieve the dream of a college education. Your organization contributed
$500 to the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of' Washington County in 1995. We hope an
equal or increased amount will be possible in 1996.
There is little doubt that education is the most effective route out of poverty for the single
mother or father who is hampered by inadequate preparation for the job market. We have
seen from experience how valuable a college diploma can be, judging from the 75% success
rate of those who have received our help since the establishment of the Fund in 1984.
Today, recipients of Single Parent Scholarships occupy positions of responsibility in local
businesses, professional offices, schools, hospitals, and government offices. They are
adding to the quality of the local work force and to the strength of our economy. Perhaps
best of all, they are able to bring up their children in a positive, healthy, nurturing
environment. They are winners because they were determined to succeed. Their success is
due, in part, to your willingness to be of help.
One hundred thirty five scholarships worth $51,125 were awarded this year by the Single
Parent Scholarship Fund of Washington County Please use the enclosed self addressed
envelope to mail your tax-deductible contribution soon in order that we will be able to offer
as many or more scholarships in the year to come. Thank you very much for your generous
gift: it is the heart of our effort to help people to help themselves.
Warmest regards,
S Sc)iJ
