HomeMy WebLinkAbout1972-01-03 Minutes• MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING BOARD OF TRUSTEES FIREMEN'S PENSION AND RELIEF FUND January 3, 1972 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Firemen's Pension and Relief Fund of Fayetteville, Arkansas, was held in the Director's Room in the City Administration Building on Monday, January 3, 1972, at 4:30 P.M. Present: Chairman Wesley M. Howe, Secretary LoVetta Moore, Treasurer Patrick J. Tobin, Fire Chief Charles McWhorter, and Board Members: Paul Logue, Harold Lee, Howard Boudrey, and Dean Harris. Absent: None. The minutes of the last regular meeting on December 6, 1971, copies of which had previously been distributed to each of the Board members, were approved. The Secretary presented the Authorization Form to pay the January pensions. Mr. Boudrey moved that the disbursements be allowed. The motion was seconded by Mr. Logue, and upon roll call passed unanimously. Chief McWhorter opened for discussion the subject of raising the volunteer firemen's pension pay and stated that if the Board decides to grant such a • raise the two alternatives are (1) Make it a blanket raise, or (2) Raise the members as they retire rather than go back and raise everyone. Considerable discussion followed and several of the Board members expressed a desire to see what other cities in the State are paying on volunteer firemen's pension before taking any action. As a result of the discussion, Chairman Howe was asked to write the Municipal League to obtain information on volunteer firemen's pay as well as the pension widows receive in other cities in the State. - Chairman Howe appointed Board members Logue and Harris to check with the widows presently drawing pension to see if they are in need of having their pension pay raised. Chief McWhorter agreed to send each of the Board members, for their review prior to the next meeting, a list of the volunteers drawing pension pay. Board Member Harris asked Mr. Howe if it was possible to obtain information regarding the percentage of fires the part -paid firemen are called to in towns of comparable size to Fayetteville. Mr. Howe replied that he did not believe he could obtain this information from the Municipal League. Chief McWhorter stated that he would try to obtain this information from the Arkansas Inspection and Rating Bureau. Treasurer Tobin advised the Board that the pension fund cash position would allow for the release of $10,000 for investment purposes. Following discussion by the Board, Chief McWhorter moved that $10,000 be invested at First Federal for two years at 6% interest. The motion was seconded 40 by Mr. Logue, and upon roll call passed unanimously. • There being no further business, Chief McWhorter moved that the meeting be adjourned. The motion was seconded by Mr. Logue, and passed unanimously, whereupon the Chairman declared the meeting adjourned.
