I would like to offer for your consideration, the purchase of a four -wheeled towed, 600 Ampere capa )art welding machine for the primary use of thawing pipes during extreme cold weather. While it does a very satisfactory job, there are many drawbacks to its use. In addition to a Water Department crew, a truck and a crew of two Len are required from the Power Company Also, there are places where tfie p6Qer Compariyfdoes not have a econdary wires on the poles, or they do not have transformer capacity in their secondary services. The ortable, heavy-duty welding generator mentioned above develops its own power and our own crew is all hat is needed to operate it. In the recent zero weather we had to thaw approximately 400 water lines in yards. This was done over period of five or six days. We could have done this in half this time with a more mobile unit. I hesitate to recommend this expenditure, inasmuch as it is not used every few years. On the other hand, it is difficult not to.recommend the purchase of this machine for the reason that when it is need it is invaluable. Respectfully submitted, (s) W.
