HomeMy WebLinkAbout1958-05-01 Minutes315 The City Council of Fayetteville, Arkansas, met in regular session on Monday, April 28, 1958, at 7:30 P.M. and was opened with a prayer by Dr. Walter Johnson, Pastor of the • University Baptist Church of Fayetteville. Present: University J. Austin Parish, City Clerk George J. Davis, City Attorney A. D. McAllis- ter Jr., City Engineer W. C. Smith, Chief of Police Pearl Watts, Fire Chief Burl Skelton, and Aldermen: Barnhart, Smith, Burgin, Lunsford, Williams, Hatfield, Kent, and Walker. Absent: City Controller Albert J. Jones. The minutes of the regular session on Monday, April 14, 1958, and -of the two special sessions on.Friday, April 18, 1958 were read and approved. Off -Street Mr. Fred Hunt and others appeared before the Council in regard to an Off -Street Parking parking) lot. Mr. Hunt reported that the Chamber of Commerce Off -Street Parking Committee recom- mended that the City purchase some property near the square on East Avenue and convert lot discussed. this property to an off-street parking lot. After a lengthy discussion, Alderman Williams moved that the Mayor appoint a committee from the Council to meet with the committee from the Chamber of Commerce to study this problem and report at the next regular meeting of the Council. The motion was seconded by Alderman Hatfielj-qr}d passed unanimously, whereupon the Mayor appointed Aldermen Lunsford, Williams,A nd'Kent to serve on the committee. Jacks 1st A retu Perm gran Willis Sise for compl _Q , I C A public hearing was held on a proposed ordinance entitled,"AN ORDINANCE PROHIBITING KEEPING GROCERY STORES OPEN ON SUNDAY; PROHIBITING THE SALE OF GROCERIES THEREFROM; on EXCEPTING DRUG STORES FROM PROVISIONS HEREOF; PROVIDING FOR A PENALTY FOR VIOLATION Ord. The City Building Inspector reported that the Building Committee recommended that further investigation and consultation with the adjacent property owners be made by the �,. Building Inspector concerning the proposed alterations and improvements on the Eason Building and to report at the next regular meeting, there being no further business, Alderman Lunsford moved to adjourn. Austin Parish, City Clerk George J. Davis, and Aldermen: Ralph Barnha Lynn Smith, Bruce Lunsford, Webb Williams, Herbert Hatfield, Dale Kent, and Bryan Wslke Absent: Alderman Ellis Burgin. The Mayor announced that this was the time set for hearing protests, objections and sug gestions concerning Ordinance No. 1166, passed and approved by the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas on April 18, 1958, and concerning the issuance of Water - Works and Sewer Refunding and Construction Revenue Bonds authorized and ordered issued thereby and that all members of the Council had been notified both by letter and by telephone but Alderman Ellis Burgin had reported he would be unable to attend because h would be out of the City. The Mayor also stated that a copy of the ordinance together with notice of the adoption thereof, the contemplated issuance of the bonds, and of the meeting on this date for hearing protests had been duly published as required by law. He then called upon anyone present who desired to do so to present protests, objections or suggestions. A long discussion and explanation of the ordinance followed after which the Mayor state that as there was nofurther business, he declared the meeting adjourned. Mr. Sisemore's property was annexed to the City last year (1957) and at this time he was in the process of building an automobile repair d to garage.
