AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE INTRODUCTION OF FLUORINE INTO THE DRINKING WATER
PLY SYSTEM WHICH SERVICES THE -,,CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE,ARKANSASS PROVIDING FOR THE REGULAT
FLUORIDATION AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, it appears to be the consensus of scientific,medical and dental opini
the presence of fluorine in drinking water is a deterrent to tooth decay;and
WHEREAS.. such chemical element is not found in a high enough concentration in
atural supply of water dgistributed to the City of Fayetteville,Arkansas;and
i WHEREAS,fluoridation of drinking water has been endorsed by the United States
c Health Service,the American Public Health Association, the American Dental Associ
and the American Water Works Association; and
WHEREAS fluoridation of drinking water within the State of Arkansas,has been
pproved in pricipal by the State Health"Department, and plans for the necessary equipm
f installed, must be approved by the State Health Departmemt.before the City of Fayet
ille could install and operate such equipment; and
WHEREAS, it appears that fluoridation could be introduced into the drinking
later supply of the City of Fayetteville,Arkansas, as a measure to promote public health
and welfare, •
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE,
ARKANSAS:
SECTION 1. Upon receiving"a permit from the State Health Department,the City W.
Superintendent be and he is hereby authorized to provide the means and to proceed with tl
introduction of fluorine into the water sup�y for the City of Fayetteville,Arkansas,in
quantities as are required"to maintain throughout the pipe distribution system a concent:
tion ofapproximately one part per million, provided plans for the necessary equipment,
• installation and operation involved in such introduction be first approved by`_the State
Health Department.
PASSED AND APPROVED THIS 20th DAY OF NNE, 1955.

The Mayor stated that the meeting had been adjo"ad from the regular meeVg of June E
s that Business men and residents near the University and along West Dickson Street might
have ani opportmnity to'present their views on the proposal of the State Highway Departmer

then North aLoiag;, rk&nsaetavenue to Maple Street, then West along Maple Street to Garland
Avenue to a route beginning at the intersection of Highway 71 and 62, and running West to
Ramarback Road, then North to Maple Street, then East along Maple Street to Garland Avenue
AI stated that the Highway Commission had set a DEAD -LINE date of June 13th. for the City
a�cept their proposal. After a general discussion of the proposal ,it was agreed for the
Mayor to put in a phone call to Highway Commision4Director Herbert Eldridge and ask for ar.
rxtension of the"DEAD=LINE", which was done, and the Mayor was told -to put his request in
tAe form of a letter and mail to him the next day, and that he would present the request
t' the Commission at their next meeting.
Alderman Williams made a motion that the Mayor.be authorized to investigate the
cost of re -surfacing the Square, this motion was seconded by Alderman McAllister, and was
p ssed unanimously by the Council.

regular meeting of June 6th., was called up for consideration, and after a lengthy discus
s,ion of the merits of the Ordinance by several persons, both for and against the Ordinane
was heard by the Council,Alderman Williams made a motion that the Ordinance be read the t
t!ime,'this motion was seconded by Ald6rman-Hunt, and on roll call by the Clerk the follow
vote was-recorded;'Ayes:`Richardson;Parish, Hunt, Lunsford, Williams, McAllister, Bronson
and Alexander. Nays:None. And the Mayor declared the Cmotionc; passed, as there were 8 Ay
and no Nays:

The Mayor then put the question "Shall the Ordinance pass?, and on roll call by t
Clerk, the'following vote was recorded: AyeseRichardson, Parish, Hunt,Lunsford, Williams,
4cAllister, Brons&n and Alexander. Nays:None. And the Mayor declared the Ordinance passed
as there were 8 Ayes, and no Nays.
