OTHERS PRESENT:
The minutes of the December 7, 1981
Board of Adjustment Meeting were approved
as mailed.
The next item of business was
the Public Hearing on the Appeal
No. 81-25, Wiggins Memorial United
Methodist Church, 205 West Sixth Street,
application to vary setbacks.
Clark McClinton and Charles E. Watts were present to represent.
The Chairman asked for comments in favor of the request. McClinton addressed
the Board. He stated the original church structure was built in 1941, the building
marked "sanctuary" was constructed in 1965. Both structures were in compliance
with setback requirements when they were built. However, the designation of
6th Street has been changed and the setbacks increased. McClinton stated the
Church is requesting the variance in order to construct a bell tower. The
bell tower will not be constructed in front of either structure. In addition
to the construction,of the bell tower, if.the variance is granted, the Church is
also bricking up the base of the old building,..connecting the two existing
structures and changing the entrance to the Church If this variance is granted,
there will be nothing protruding in front of either of the existing buildings.
Larry Thompkins asked what the designation for 6th Street is on the Master
Street Plan. Bobbie Jones stated it is an 80 ft. right of way and the Church
has dedicated an easement to bring its side of 6th Street up to City width
standards.
Larry Thompkins asked what the height of the proposed structure will be.
McClinton stated it will be 40 ft. above floor level.
The Chairman asked if there was anyone appearing in opposition to the
request. There was no opposition.
The Chairman closed the public hearing on Appeal No. 81-25 and opened it up
to comments from the Board members.
Don Mills stated she had no problem with the request.
Thompkins asked Bobbie Jones if there was any problem with the height of the
bell tower. Bobbie Jones stated it appears to be in compliance with the Airport
Zoning restrictions on height.
