FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1960, 3:30 P. M. CITY COUNCIL ROOM
Present: Mr. John I. Smith, Chairman Absent: Mr. Tom Schiewetz
Mr. James A. Pennington
Mr. J. F. Robinson
Mr. George Bowen
Mr. Harold E. Lieberenz, Building Inspector
Mr. Lowell E. Chaney, applicant
Mr. T. Ewing Shelton and Mr. Dick Whiting, architects, appearing
in behalf of Mr. Chaney.
The meeting was called to order by Mr. Smith. The minutes were approved
as written and mailed to the Board.
Mr. Lowell E. Chaney of 311 St. Charles Avenue applied for a variation from
the requirements of the Zoning Ordinance. His property is located in a R-2
Residential Zone of the City. The applicant wished to erect a carport extending
to his South property line, which is an alley. The Zoning Ordinance requires
that the carport be erected five feet from the alley line. The roof line of
the carport will extend around part of the front 6f the hnilding. The extension
will be 23 feet from the front street property line instead of the 25 feet required.
• It was pointed out by the architects that a wall was to be built on the alley,
which could be built whether the carport was built or not. The Board could
not see how the carport could do any harm if the wall was to be built anyway.
It was also pointed out that the alley was used as a business alley by Dyke
Lumber Company, which placed a hardship on Mr. Chaney. He very often
had no access to his garage. Mr. Shelton said that he believed the wall and
the carport would actually relieve the congestion instead of adding to it.
It was ascertained that there had been no objections to the application since the
sign had been placed on the property stating Mr. Chaney's intentions.
There were no further questions, and the applicants were dismissed.
The Board voted unanimously to approve the application of Mr. Chaney.
