REGULAR MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Pat Gazzola called the regular monthly meeting of the Fayetteville Advertising and
Promotion Commission to order on February 9 at the Fayetteville Town Center at 2 :00 p.m.
INTRODUCTION OF NEW COMMISSIONER
Chairman Gazzola introduced Mayor Lioneld Jordan who will fill the city council position vacated by
Dan Coody.
MINUTES
Moved by Davis, second by Schmitt to approve the minutes of the January 12, 2009 meeting. Motion
carried.
HMR COLLECTIONS
• Marilyn presented HMR collections for January. Collections were down -4.48%.
Hotel HMR revenue for January was down from -20.60% from last January. Restaurant revenue was
down in January -8.80%.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Keith Glass presented financial statements for December 2008 . Figures presented were preliminary
and will be updated with information needed from the city for final year end figures and for city audit.
Motion to approve the preliminary financials by Davis, second by Freeman. Motion carried.
CITY ATTORNEY
City Attorney Kit Williams reported that the City Prosecutor's office collected $8,824.67 in January.
The number of cases pending remains over 20 with new cases outpacing paid-in-full cases.
Accounting Division is still experiencing a problem with a few restaurants not submitting the proper
HMR forms.
CLINTON HOUSE MUSEUM REPORT
Museum attendance was 71 visitors in January. Activities and scheduled events for January, February
and March were reviewed.
VISITOR BUREAU
• Allyson Twiggs Dyer reported on the first annual Restaurant Week. It was off to an icy start, but
restaurants had good specials. The VB will run again in August. Allyson bid on the Keep Arkansas
Beautiful commission meeting in July, Arkansas parks & Recreation meeting in 2010, Medical
Directors conference, and 3 baseball tournaments.
The Farmer' s Market conference was successful . Julie is attending Bank Travel Management
• conference. The UA Recruits are using Fayetteville hotels again.
Maudie complemented the CVB for Restaurant Week.
TOWN CENTER
Sandra Bennett reported sales goals for January were down. The Town Center hosted a bridal Fair in
January, "Here Comes the Bride." Over 145 brides and 45 vendors participated in the event. The
Town Center is controlling expenses since revenue is down.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REPORT
Marilyn reported that she attended the Ft. Worth Home & Garden Show. She has been working with
the agency for the 09 marketing plan and on content management for the Town Center website.
We have received notification that the 501 (c) 3 was received by the IRS and is in the initial review
process. Response should be back from the IRS within 60 days from their receipt which was Jan. 6.
AGENCY REPORT
Mike Sells said unveiled the new logo and new ads and concept copy for the Advertising and
Promotion Commission. The concept plays off of the sports themes, i.e. Home of Top Draft Picks
(Dickson St. entertainment district), Watch the Hogs Run Wild (Bikes, Blues and BBQ).
• The agency is working on ad sales for the Visitor Guide. Commissioners are encouraged to advertise
in the guide.
Leigh presented the latest web statistics.

The Commission adjourned into Executive Session for review of the Executive Director.
Upon completion of the Executive Session, Commissioner Gazzola reconvened the meeting. Moved
by Rhoads, second by Freeman to raise the salary of the executive director to $72,000. Motion carried.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Being considered for the A&P Commission would be a great honor to me. If given the opportunity to serve I would do everything within
my experience and knowledge to serve Fayetteville to the best of my ability. My goal would be able to give the A&P a little different perspective
that may capture the interests of many different people with the hope of bringing fun and exciting events to a city that I love dearly.

They create jobs and increase tax revenue with minimal impact on infrastructure. Promoting tourism in Fayetteville also gives the city a

Thank you for the opportunity to apply to serve on the Advertising and Promotion Commission
for The City of Fayetteville. Having been a long-term resident of both Fayetteville and Northwest
Arkansas, I have a great interest in the economic health and the quality of life in our community.
I believe Fayetteville is one of the best places in the entire country to live, work and play. Even
with the current economic climate, our community continues to be a place where people want to be.
I attended the University of Arkansas and graduated in 1985. I've seen Fayetteville grow and
prosper. My work experience includes event production, media production, trade show production,
festival logistics and production and many other hospitality and entertainment activities. I have had the
opportunity to work in many major cities in the United States. I believe Fayetteville has much to offer
for hospitality, tourism and entertainment.
• Currently, my partner Lea Ann and I own Southern Hospitality Management Company. We
provide event management, meeting support and hospitality consulting services. Our client list includes
ARVEST, Cox Communications, PepperSource and several Departments of the University of
Arkansas. We have encouraged our clients to utilize Fayetteville as a venue for their events, and
continue to do so. We are currently in development of several major recurring events that promise to
draw several thousand attendees to Fayetteville in 2009.
While many people think of Fayetteville as the Home of the Razorbacks, and UofA sports are a
huge entertainment and tourism draw, we have many other things to offer as well. Our Farmer's Market
is second to none. The Botanical Gardens continue to grow and improve. The Civil War history of the
area is extensive. And we have several festivals each year that axe great family entertainment
The hospitality, entertainment and tourism industries offer great contributions to the .
community. Many times, visitors' impressions of a community are largely based on its entertainment
and lodging amenities. The industries offer a great tax revenue base without adding significant impact
to the infrastructure.
I would welcome an opportunity to play a more involved role in the continuation and growth of
hospitality and entertainment in Fayetteville as a member of the Advertising and Promotion
Commission. Thank you for your consideration.

2. Why would you like to be considered for appointment to this committee?
I have always been interested in serving on this committee, and would consider it an
honor. I feel that I would bring a different type of expertise to the commission. Many of
your past members have been restaurant owners and hotel executives. As the owner of a
catering company, I am able to work outside the confines of my facility and deal with
many other vendors, applicable to events that are held in Fayetteville. I also have a
working relationship with clients and vendors from all aspects of the corporate arena.
Lastly, I feel very strongly that Fayetteville needs to expand its local attractions to keep
people in our city and to draw more events to our city. I try to use local businesses
whenever I can for shopping, eating out, etc. In our current economic climate, I feel that
we should encourage this practice to help our business owners.

RE : Overdue HMR tax collection
The Accounting Department is seeing increasing problems in
collecting HMR taxes in a timely fashion . It recently sent out 16 letters to
• restaurants who are late in HMR payments. City Prosecutor Casey Jones has
continued his active collection efforts for cases sent to his office. His office
collected $7,052. 11 in overdue HMR taxes last month bringing the year-to-
date (two months) total to $15,876.78.
1 am concerned that these stressful economic times will see an
increase in late or nonpayment of HMR taxes. We will do everything
possible to work with our local restaurants while still insisting they follow
the law and remit the HMR taxes in a timely manner.
