Dan O'Byrne, chief executive officer of the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau, said in Janua adventure didn't end on Nov. 18; it started on Nov. 18," referring to the dedication of the Clinton librai With first-quarter numbers out, O'Byrne said Tuesday, "It's fantastic news, but I think we should all vii the beginning." The goal, he added, is "to really continue this momentum." Collections from the hotel and restaurant tax totaled $2.09 million in the quarter that ended March 31 , $ 1 .88 million in the same period last year. O'Byrne noted that hotel room revenue in the first quarter was up about 19 percent from the same peri( as about 450 more rooms per night were occupied. Those numbers include Little Rock hotels and the Riverfront in North Little Rock. River Market area restaurants did quite nicely for the first three months of the year, according to the Ci Visitors Bureau. • Gross taxable receipts from Willy D's were about 80 percent higher. The jump was about 47 percent at percent at the Flying Saucer and 36 percent at Boscos. Underground Pub posted a decline of 6 percent. exclude alcohol. Chuck Corzine, a manager at Boscos, said he expects more growth. Word of mouth helps drive people noted. "As long as the area's thriving, we're going to thrive," Corzine said. Business at the Underground Pub is still good, said Sara Harris, an owner. But she said parking and Ur location a little off President Clinton Avenue present challenges. At the Holiday Inn Presidential near Interstate 30 and Sixth Street, the Clinton center adds about four r night and 10-plus rooms on a busy one, said owner and developer Larry R. Carpenter. He said the hote year is up by double digits from a year earlier. "We've got more than just hope at this current time," he said. "We've got a strategy and a game plan to newness, the new perception of a presidential library being located right here in our city. And I'm very part of that." The Clinton center and the River Market area provide people with many activities, said Skip Rutherfoi the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation. He called Little Rock a fun and easy place to visit. • "You can arrive in the city, park your car and basically walk to some great museums, some great rests( have the beauty of the river," Rutherford said. http://www6.lexisnexis.com/publisher/EndUser?Action=UserDisplayFuliDocument&orgld... 5/4/2005 Untitled Document Page 2 of 2 • Media coverage has helped spread the word about Little Rock, he said, noting a recent article in Trave: magazine. Since it opened, the Clinton center had more than 260,000 visitors through April 30, Ruther includes more than 174,000 paid and more than 86,000 free, including student tours and an estimated rA attended the dedication. Attractions other than the Clinton center are doing well, according to a news release from the Convent: Bureau. The museum at Central High School had more than 8,000 visitors through March, the release said. Ths increase from the same period in 2004. In a statement, Mike Madell of the Central High School Nation cited several reasons: "We are becoming more wellknown as a unit of the National Park System; upcoi anniversaries of key civil rights events are [inspiring] people to visit sites like ours, and undeniably, th, Clinton Presidential Center has brought many visitors to Little Rock." First-quarter attendance at the Arkansas Arts Center was up more than 20 percent from a year earlier, i at the Historic Arkansas Museum was up 6.5 percent, the release said. Rutherford noted that other projects near the river are on the way, such as a possible baseball park in N and a nature center in Little Rock. But he said the first three months of this year have been important. "I think the first quarter of 2005 proves that [Mayor] Jim Dailey's prediction has come true that Little I tourism destination." • This article was published 5/4/2005 May 4, 2005 http://www6.lexisnexis.com/publisher/EndUser?Action=UserDisplayFullDocument&orgrd... 5/4/2005
