ORDINANCE NO *AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE INTRODUCTION OF FLUORINE INTO THE DRINKING WATER
SUPPLY , SYSTEM WHICH SERVICES THE CITY . OF FAYEl'TEVILLE, . ARKANSAS, PROVIDING FOR
THE REGULATION OF FLUORIDATION. AND . FOR OTHER PURPOSES .
WHEREAS, it appears to be the consensus of scientific, medical and dental
opinion that the presence of fluorine in drinking water is a deterrent - to tooth
decay; and
WHEREAS, such chemical element is not found in a high enough concentration
'in the natural supply of water distributed to the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas;
and
WHEREAS, fluoridation of drinking water has been endorsed by• the United States
. Public Health Service, the American. Public Health Association, 'the American Dental
Association, and the American Water Works Association; and
WHEREAS, fluoridation of drinking water within the State .of Arkansas, has been
approved in principal by the State Health Department, and plans for. the necessary
equipment and operation of such equipment, , if installed, must be approved by the
State Health Department before the City of Fayetteville could install and operate
such equipment; and - "L
WHEREAS, it appears that fluoridation could be introduced into the drinking ?
water supply .of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas, as a measure to promote public
health and welfare,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MMMIDee �cZYcu•/%• ,q sas ,
Section lz Upon receiving a permit from the State Health Department, the
City Begisvbe and he is hereby authorized to provide the means and to proceed
with the introduction of fluorine into the water supply for the City of Fayetteville,
Arkansas, in such quantities as are required to maintain throughout the pipe distribu—
tion system a concentration of approximately one part per million, provided plans for
the necessary equipment, installation and operation involved in " such introduction be
first approved by the State- Health Department
