The request is for approval of a historical marker recognizing the Henderson School. RECOMMENDATION: The Black Heritage Preservation Commission recommends approval of a new historical marker recognizing the Henderson School to be installed in the public right-of-way adjacent to N. Olive Street and the property at 350 N. Olive Avenue. BACKGROUND: The 2025 Historic Black Community of Southeast Fayetteville Historic Context Statement highlighted the significance of the Henderson School as the only school in Fayetteville for Black children in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Historic Context outlined several recommendations for acknowledging the contributions of Fayetteville's Black residents and preserving the historic places that remain to tell their stories. At the January 16, 2025 meeting of the Black Heritage Preservation Commission (BHPC), commissioners discussed the Henderson School's significance and options for a marker design. DISCUSSION: Over the next year, the BHPC worked on marker wording, design elements, and completed two site visits to select a location. At the June 18, 2026 BHPC meeting, commissioners unanimously voted to approve a marker that reads as follows: "In 1866 the American Missionary Association established the first public African American school in Fayetteville and named it Henderson School. Initially a wood frame building in another location, the original two room brick structure was constructed in 1870 on this site and served nearly one hundred Black students at its highest enrollment. The school provided education up to 8th grade, after which students had to leave Fayetteville to seek higher education elsewhere. The school closed in 1936 and students were sent to the segregated Lincoln Elementary school on Willow Street. After the Henderson School closed, it was converted to a private residence." At the meeting BHPC moved forward with a recommendation to the City Council, with a motion to recommend the Henderson School marker made by Commissioner Allured and seconded by Commissioner Huggins. A vote of 4-0-0 followed.
