PROCLAIMINC APRIL 19 THROUCH APRIL 24, 1997 AS
EARTH WEEK IN THE CITY OF FAYETTEV!LLE.
WHEREAS, nearly thirty years ago the President and the Congress of the U.S. expressed
a belief in and commitment to those values and principles that are important and meaningful
to all Americans by officially recognizing and adopting Earth Day; and
WHEREAS, this recognition served and continues to serve as an affirmation of those
values and principles, both general and specific, that all Americans have treasured and held
dear since the formation of our country; and
WHEREAS, the recognition of Earth Day affirms our commitment as a City and as a
nation to our families, our homes, our communities and the natural environment on which
these depend; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fayetteville acknowledges that it is an American and
lnternational tradition in many cities to recognize and endorse Eafth Day which this year has
become Earth Week.
WHEREAS, the recognition of Earth Week promotes and encourages pride in the
community and the region by directing attention toward and raising awareness of
environmental issues and their relationship to the quality of life in Fayetteville and northwest
Arkansas; and
WHEREAS, Fayetteville's long term social benefits are promoted and enhanced by the
values associated with the recognition and promotion of Earth Week due to the increasing
values of clean air, fresh water, and natural beauty to a city ever seeking to cultivate its
potential.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE tT RESOTVED BY THE CITY COUNCII OF THE CtTy Ot
FAYETTEVI LLE, ARKANSAS:

Section 1. That the Mayor and City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas
hereby officially recognizes, adopts and proclaims April 19 through April 24,1997 as Earth
Wegk€nd.encourages all of its citizens to participate in the celebration of this event.
