HomeMy WebLinkAbout250-25 RESOLUTIONPage 1 113 West Mountain Street Fayetteville, AR 72701 (479) 575-8323 Resolution: 250-25 File Number: 2025-2348 A RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS THE CITY COUNCIL’S REQUEST TO GOVERNOR SANDERS TO PROVIDE FOOD TO NEEDY ARKANSANS SINCE THE FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM HAS LAPSED WHEREAS, one of every eight Americans (our neediest families, children, veterans, and the disabled) use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to buy groceries so they can survive the next month; and WHEREAS, approximately 118,000 Arkansas households rely upon SNAP every month for food to feed their families; and WHEREAS, federal food aid will not be provided after November 1, 2025 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture since the government remains shutdown and no federal provision has yet been passed to fully fund SNAP; and WHEREAS, the Fayetteville City Council thanks Governor Sarah Sanders for providing $500,000 in funding for Arkansas Food Banks; and WHEREAS, the City Council is as concerned as Governor Sanders is for the health and welfare of hungry Arkansas families, children, veterans, the elderly, and disabled citizens that will likely be denied food benefits due to the federal government’s refusal to fully fund the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS: Section 1: That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby requests that the Honorable Sarah Sanders, Governor of Arkansas, do everything reasonably possible including using available reserves and other funds to ensure Arkansas’ 118,000 families dependent for their food upon the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program benefits will not go hungry. Section 2: That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby also requests that Governor Sarah Sanders contact President Donald Trump and Arkansas Federal Delegation to urge a bipartisan agreement to fund these critical SNAP benefits for our hungry children, families, veterans, the elderly, and the disabled.
