Dear Council Members,
I’m writing to offer my vocal and public support for the Bates/Siemek rezoning proposals (I believe agenda items C.1. - C.4 and D.1.). I
understand that there’s been some vocal opposition to these proposal but not support.
For context, I’ve been a resident of Fayetteville since 2019 and have lived in South Fayetteville since 2020. I’ve seen firsthand the
impacts of the city’s housing crisis and support the urgent need for additional housing and mixed use urban development. My
understanding is that Bates and Siemek intend to increase density and introduce amenities to the neighborhood, such as a cafe, while
also adhering to the principals of new urbanism (along with smart growth and placemaking) in order to hep the neighborhood maintain
its unique sense of place and community. And I believe their vision aligns with the goals of City and its Planning Division.
All of this, to my mind, is a good thing. I want to live in a neighborhood that is denser, more diverse, walkable, and community oriented.
I understand those who oppose the project may be scared of change, even if they support growth in general. However, NIMBYism will
only prolong Fayetteville’s housing crisis and make living in the city less affordable. Change is scary, change is hard, especially for
those who are nostalgic for a Fayetteville that no longer exists, and change is also inevitable. Bates and Siemek have put forward a
vision of positive change that will benefit South Fayetteville as it exists today and support it as it grows into the future.
I’m sorry that I can’t attend this meeting in person but I’lll happily continue this conversation with council members or other concerned
residents.
All best,
Bryan Hurt
