Attendants: Mayor Lionel Jordan, Nancy Allen, James Tolbert, Lisa Orton, Robin Devine,
Sonya Zimmer, Will Dockery, Rick McKinney, and Sarah Harrell
Mayor Jordan opened the meeting and reviewed current issues discussed in other city
meetings.
1. Passing of the bond package
2. Homeless Issues
a. New Beginnings Homeless Village opened last Thursday.
b. Since 2016, Fayetteville has transitioned 89 homeless adults to permanent
housing.
c. 7Hills is now part of the City of Fayetteville’s annual budget and is allocated
$650,000/yr.
d. There is a city ordinance that If a homeless encampment is on public property
and a complaint is lodged the the homeless must be removed. This does not
mean the homeless problem goes away.
e. Gregory Park Hammock Hotel - this is set back in the woods and has become a
sleeping area for homeless.
f. We have around 200-300 homeless in Fayetteville and around 2800 regionally.
3. Fayetteville Growth
a. Between 2010 - 2015 the city grew by 7500 people.
b. Average age of permanent residents is 28.
c. Fayetteville has the highest land sell cost in region.
d. Home costs are between $160-$180/sq ft.
e. We need to allow diversity in neighborhoods but not force it.
f. We need to define what “affordable housing” and “appropriate infill” mean.
g. How do we get developers to build affordable housing, and housing that fits in
with the architecture of the neighborhood.
4. Miscellaneous
a. Workforce Training should be up and running in 2 or 3 months. May take place
at FHS.
b. Millsap Mountain will have a camping area and hiking trails.
c. The City is looking at purchasing Lewis Fields.
d. How to reduce the deer population that makes everyone happy. No solutions
yet.
e. Better public transportation - Mayor’s Box
New Business
1. We need to create a charter for the group.
2. We need to elect a Chairperson
3. James Tolbert volunteered to serve as Vice Chairperson
4. Sarah Harrell volunteered to serve as Secretary
Next Meeting - May 23, 5:30 pm, at City Hall, Room 326. Mayor Jordan volunteered to bring
Susan Norton, a map of Fayetteville Wards, and a sample charter.
