Hi,
My name is Mia Moon, I am a Fayetteville resident and have lived in Fayetteville for most
of my life.
I am reaching out to address the upcoming ceasefire resolution voting in the city council on
May 7th. I really hope we can count on you to amplify our voices, as we have been silenced
for 202 days by Sen. Cotton & Boozman, and Congressman Womack. In Fayetteville, we
pride ourselves for being a funky, peaceful and inclusive city, where violence and
oppression are not welcome. Just as members of the city council did in 2018 in support of
Ukraine, I really hope you will stand up for humanity by calling for a ceasefire and
delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. It is really disheartening for many
Americans to live paycheck to paycheck or drown in debt while our government passes bills
using BILLIONS of our tax dollars as military aid to foreign countries. Each year, Arkansas
sends nearly 20 MILLION as military aid to Israel, and Fayetteville 1.4 million (not
including supplemental packages recently passed). Myself, like many others in the
community, wish we could see our hard earned tax dollars reallocated into the wellbeing of
our community.
I am a pediatric physical therapist assistant serving our community. From a healthcare
perspective, the crisis in Gaza is horrific. Hospitals have been targeted and destroyed and
medical staff directly sniped. Weeks ago, mass graves of >300 Palestinian bodies were
found, some wearing scrubs with their decomposing hands ziptied together. On average, 10
children a day are forced to undergo amputation without anesthetic. There are whole
generations of youth who are permanently disabled. These are unspeakable acts of violence
and we should not be forced for our tax dollars to fund this.
To call for a ceasefire, an end to the mass loss of lives we are witnessing, should not be a complicated issue - it's
an attempt towards saving lives and establishing peace. This is a humanitarian crisis and our silence / inaction
translate into complicity. This is an extremely urgent situation and we have several Palestinian Americans living
in Fayetteville who fear the loss of their beloved family members in Gaza daily. Fayettevilles call for a ceasefire
will not magically end the senseless killing happening in the Middle East, but many Fayetteville residents would
be proud to know their city council is serious when it claims to be pro-peace and anti-oppression. Opposing
oppression and questioning the status quo can be a scary thing, but we need leaders who are brave enough to
stand up against injustice wherever they see it. Killing >40,000 people is not self defense. For a government to
openly say no child in Gaza is innocent, is language we should vehemently condemn. Please, please consider this
an opportunity to use your platform and power to take a stand with humanity, something that will be praised
once this is studied in the history books.
Thank you so much for your time,
