I am writing to you today to express my support for the ceasefire resolution that is currently planned to be discussed and voted on during the May 7th city council meeting. I believe this resolution is a wonderful step our community can take to continue to be a leader for peace and justice in the state of Arkansas. Fayetteville has long been influential to movements for equality and human rights for those in our state and across the country. I am hoping now we can also look beyond our immediate surroundings and join the global community in calling for peace. The ongoing genocide in Gaza is a horrific event that is being broadcast to the world, and the global community is feeling the effects as we struggle to find ways to try to help put an end to this violence. We cannot keep allowing our own tax dollars to fund a military that has reportedly committed numerous war crimes and has, as of the latest count, killed over 15,000 children. This is not a special case or a specific agenda against any particular country. These actions are intolerable, and it would do irreparable harm to the soul of our community to know this is happening and stand by without trying to do something to save lives. This is especially true given that American tax dollars are being used to pay for the weapons that are killing these civilians, and the representatives from our state have done nothing but continue to advocate for more funding toward it. Our state and national leaders need to see that Arkansas communities are serious about the call for justice and peace. They need to know that the communities they represent do not support these decisions. I believe this resolution very fairly addresses this concern as it calls for those very leaders to listen to the people of this state and seek peaceful solutions. If you would like to discuss the resolution further, I would gladly speak over the phone or meet in person to discuss any concerns or reservations you have about this resolution. I look forward to hearing from you and learning more about your position in this matter.
